Les glycines, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1919 -1920 · Marmottan Monet Museum · inventory 5124

Glycines, panoramic panel W1903hand painted reproduction

In this three-meter panel, the flowering is concentrated in height and allows a vast lilac field to extend below. The width forces the eye to circulate: the wisteria appear like successive layers of sea green, white, blue and pink, without clearly imposed beginning or end.

Look at the work

The large purple void gives the hanging clusters their lightness and scale

The left part is the most open. A few orange-red branches cross a blue-gray veil before the flowers thicken towards the center. This slow progression prevents the frieze from becoming a regular decorative band.

On the right, the clusters go down almost to the middle of the canvas. Yellowish whites, pinks and blues accumulate on a pale green background. Further down, small brown and green traces are enough to prolong the movement without filling the area with mist.

The strength of the panel comes as much from what Monet paints as from what he lets breathe: the lilac mist gives the clusters their suspension and transforms the width into duration.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Glycines, panoramic panel W1903 - Claude Monet
01

Increasing density from left to right

The flowers remain rare at first then become heavier. This progression must be preserved so that the eye actually crosses three meters of the composition.

02

Warm accents inside a cold range

Fine red and orange touches appear among the blues and greens. They structure the branches and awaken the palette without becoming continuous lines.

03

The void as a pictorial element

The lower purple area is not unfinished: it contains gray, pink and green covers. Erasing or standardizing them would destroy the light depth of the panel.

The purple veil and the left branchesThe close-up reveals blue-gray and pink covers under the thin orange branches. The clusters remain deliberately spaced and the canvas breathes between the keys.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Format01

A monumental panel measuring 100 × 300 cm

The one to three report explains the frieze organization and lateral circulation of the gaze. The painting is unsigned and bears the inventory number 5124 at the Marmottan Monet Museum.

Catalog raisonné02

The Wildenstein 1903 version

Number 1903 precisely distinguishes this panel from other Glycines painted at the end of Monet's life, notably taller or more strongly blue compositions.

Conservation03

A late work transmitted by Michel Monet

The painting was not dispersed after the artist's death. Michel Monet preserved it and then bequeathed it to the museum in 1966 with the exceptional collection of works remaining in the family.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Inventory 5124 and Wildenstein reference 1903
  • The panoramic format of 100 × 300 cm
  • The progression of density between left and right
  • The lilac area preserved nuanced and non-uniform
