À propos de l’œuvre

Tête de paysanne au bonnet noir, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · January 1885 · Nuenen

Peasant head in black hat, F1667Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

An almost black cap frames the face of a peasant woman from Nuenen. The forehead and bridge of the nose receive a yellow light, the right cheek heats up orange and red, then the neck and clothing dissolve into a very deep green-brown background.

Look at the work

The portrait focuses on the passage of light through a dark face

The headdress and dress are only described by a few differences of black, green and brown. This economy of details makes the head more present: the look, the closed mouth and the relief of the cheeks become the only events in the image.

The modeling proceeds in colored areas rather than gentle transitions. A yellow band descends from the forehead towards the nose; olive passages occupy the eye sockets and jaw; orange gives weight to the right cheek.

Peasant's Head with Black Cap F1667/JH629 is a 40.6 × 31.7 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in January 1885. The original belongs to a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This study seeks neither the finish of an official portrait nor a flattering resemblance. Van Gogh experiences the capacity of a few frank contrasts to render the structure of the face and the silent presence of the model.

01

The yellow light traces an irregular axis

It affects the forehead, nose, top of the lip and chin. These discontinuous accents are enough to bring out the frontal profile of the dark background.

02

The cap forms an absorbent frame

Its wide outline is barely separated from the background. The darker it remains, the more concentrated and intense the facial colors appear.

03

The orange cheek breaks the earthy scale

Brick red and orange oppose neighboring olive greens. The face thus gains volume without resorting to white light.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The number F1667/JH629 and the dimensions of 40.6 × 31.7 cm distinguish this study from the numerous heads of dark-capped peasant women made in Nuenen.

Series

The portrait belongs to peasant studies from the winter of 1884 -1885

Van Gogh painted several dozen residents of Nuenen, framed closely and in work clothes, in order to understand the faces before a large composition of figures.

Preparation

This research leads to Potato Eaters

Marked features, low light and earth tones serve to build a credible peasant world. However, the studies are not simple sketches: each has its own balance.

Title

The reference F1667 remains essential

Several paintings are known under almost identical French titles. The catalog number and format make it possible to precisely recognize the face lit in yellow and orange.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the black headdress, the yellow stripe from the forehead to the nose, the olive green shadows, the orange cheek, the tight mouth and the gradual fusion of the garment with the background.

  • The wide and irregular outline of the dark hat
  • The yellow stripe that structures the forehead and nose
  • Eyes placed in olive green shadows
  • Right cheek shaped by red and orange
  • The bust almost entirely absorbed by the bottom
