Wisteria, Allen Memorial Art Museum W1909hand painted reproduction

Yellow and green clusters hang from the upper corners above a vast lavender blue. The composition remains horizontal, but it no longer has a traditional landscape: the space is built by vines, colorful curls and brush marks which seem to float between sky, flowers and paint.

Look at the work

The large central blue becomes an open space between two masses of wisteria

The upper left concentrates lemon yolks, dark greens and a few browns. On the right, a heavier floral mass mixes purple, olive green and pink. Between these two areas, the blue remains widely visible and gives air to a composition that is nevertheless very busy around its edges.

In the lower center, red, green and white vines descend in irregular curves. They do not describe each flower: their movement is enough to suggest the clusters. The impasto alternates with finer passages where the background blue remains perceptible.

Blue is not a simple background: it separates, connects and sets the clusters in motion, until this late canvas becomes a passage towards abstraction.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis by Wisteria, Allen Memorial Art Museum W1909 - Claude Monet
01

Two asymmetrical floral masses

The clusters of the corners do not weigh in the same way. The left is more yellow and jagged; the right denser and purple. Their imbalance animates the central blue opening.

02

Lianas drawn by gesture

The red, green and white curves are fast and discontinuous. Regularizing or closing them would remove the energy that the museum describes as essential to this work.

03

A blue composed of many temperatures

Lavender, cobalt, gray and turquoise overlap. A uniform blue surface would remove the depth and visible repetitions under the floral touches.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The yellows and greens of the left partThe close-up shows the light clusters placed on deep greens, then the red vines which descend into the blue. The keys constantly change width and thickness.

Lavender blue and hanging flowersOn the right, purples, whites and greens group together around descending curves. The blue background remains active under the impasto and gives depth to the flowers.

The official image measures 1200 × 891 px and the two native details 600 × 750 px. No files have been enlarged; the three WebPs respect the definition actually available from the museum.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Oberlin 1960.5, Wildenstein 1909

The Allen Memorial Art Museum dates this oil on canvas to 1919 -1920. It measures 149.9 × 200.5 cm, has object number 1960.5 and corresponds to Wildenstein number 1909.

Unfinished decor02

A frieze imagined above the Water Lilies

Monet envisions wisteria paintings as a superior accompaniment to large decorative panels. The dimensions of the Orangery ultimately do not allow their installation with the Water Lilies cycle.

Provenance03

From Monet's studio to the Oberlin Museum

After the painter's death, the painting remained with Michel Monet. She then moved to Paul Rosenberg & Co. in New York, then the Allen Memorial Art Museum acquired it in 1960 thanks to the RT Miller Jr. Fund.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of Oberlin, 1960.5 and W1909
  • The original format of 149.9 × 200.5 cm
  • The large blue interval preserved between the clusters
  • Colored vines kept free and discontinuous

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Lavender blue, lime yellow, olive green and purple give this reproduction a bright and very contemporary presence. It works particularly well on a warm white, gray blue or deep green wall.
