Look at the work

Each nest has its construction, its material and its place in the undergrowth

The large nests at the bottom are made of tangled dark strands; the one on the left opens like a deep cavity. At the top, the more compact shapes recall the closed nests of the troglodyte.

The little egg nest brings the only light circle. Around it, greens, ochres and browns do not describe a precise decoration: they bring together moss, foliage and fragments of branches in a continuous surface.

Still life with five bird nests F111/JH939 is a 39.3 × 46.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in September - October 1885. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under inventory s0001V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh collects abandoned nests and considers them natural architecture. He does not align them like scientific specimens: he installs them in an environment of moss and leaves that highlights their variety.

01

The openings give several depths

The large black cavity on the left, the more discreet hollows in the center and the light nest on the right offer successive degrees of darkness.

02

The fibers are translated by short gestures

Twigs, grasses and leaves are painted with lines that change direction. The tangle remains readable without becoming a meticulous drawing.

03

The eggs form a resting point

Their cream light contrasts with the dark earths. Placed on the right edge rather than in the center, they balance the two large nests on the left side.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F111/JH939, s0001V1962 and the 39.3 × 46.5 cm format distinguish the five nests of the Van Gogh Museum from other still lifes of nests painted in Nuenen.

Letter

Van Gogh says he had already painted four in September 1885

He explains to Theo that nature watchers might like the colors of the moss, dry leaves and grasses gathered around the nests.

Symbol

The nest also evokes human habitation

In the same correspondence, Van Gogh brings together the nests of the cottages of the moor and their inhabitants, to whom he feels deeply attached.

Observation

The shapes correspond to several types of construction

The two closed nests at the top differ from the small open nest containing the eggs and the large twig structures placed in the foreground.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the five distinct nests, the large dark cavity on the left, the two round shapes at the top, the light eggs, the twigs and the moss green passages.

  • The large black opening of the lower left nest
  • The two closed nests aligned high up
  • The small light nest containing the eggs on the right
  • The branches that cross the edges of the composition
  • Green touches mixed with ocher and brown leaves
