A room reduced to the essentials

The bed occupies the entire right side and advances towards the viewer. On the left, two chairs frame the door; at the back, the dressing table has a pitcher and a glass under the closed green window.

Clothes, towels, mirrors and portraits liven up the walls without cluttering the room. The dark blue contours keep each piece of furniture in place despite the deliberately unstable vanishing lines.

Painted in Arles in October 1888, this first version of The Room is oil on canvas F482/JH1608 from the Van Gogh Museum. It measures approximately 72 × 90 cm and has inventory number s0047V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

In his letter of October 16, 1888, Van Gogh explained that color, simplified and laid in flat tones, should suggest rest and sleep rather than a faithful imitation of light.

Perspective accompanies the actual piece

The exterior wall of the bedroom was oblique, but Van Gogh further accentuates the convergence of the bed, chairs and floor to give the small interior an immediate presence.

The shadows disappear

The furniture is separated by contours and frank contrasts. Without realistic modeling or cast shadows, the composition is close to the Japanese print admired by the artist.

A harmony thought color by color

Van Gogh describes pale purple walls, a red floor, a buttery yellow bed, a scarlet blanket, a green window and a blue bowl: each shade has a specific role.

The correspondence allows us to distinguish this original version from the two rehearsals painted in 1889 in Saint-Rémy.

F482 is the painting of Arles. Versions F483 from the Musée d'Orsay and F484 from the Art Institute of Chicago are covers made the following year.
