The white headdress unfolds on each side of the face then disappears into a black-brown background. The blue-green bodice and the light collar close the portrait at shoulder level.
Head of Gordina de Groot F141/JH783 is an oil on canvas of 41 × 34.5 cm painted in Nuenen in May 1885. This study of the Potato Eaters model belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color

Van Gogh contrasts the light shapes of the headdress with the very deep shadows of the face and background. The touch follows the bones, the folds of the fabric and the volumes of the neck, giving the portrait an almost sculptural force.
