Look at the work

The village caught between two movements of land

The houses occupy the center of the canvas. Their orange, blue and gray roofs overlap, punctuated by several gables and a bell tower. Behind them, a green hill rises almost to the sky.

In the foreground, the vegetation is painted in large gray-green loops which follow the relief. The sky, on the contrary, is laid in horizontal white and blue bands; these opposite directions frame the architecture.

Van Gogh does not describe every street: he condenses Auvers into a frieze of roofs, held between the swell of grass and the large flat area of the hill.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum preserves this view under inventory s0105V1962. It is cataloged F799/JH2004 and is one of the very first paintings made in Auvers.

01

An almost square composition

The 50 × 52 cm format limits the panoramic effect. The houses are therefore superimposed in depth and the green slope acts as a continuous bottom.

02

Three brush writings

Tight loops in the foreground, flat and diagonal in the hill, horizontal bands in the sky: each area receives a different rhythm, clearly readable.

03

Roofs as a chromatic range

Orange, slate blue, purple gray and white distribute buildings without rigid architectural outline. The village remains recognizable while becoming a construction of colors.

Documented benchmarks

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must preserve the almost square format, the differences between each roof, the large green slope and the three rhythms of touch which separate foreground, village and sky.

  • The gray-green curls of the vegetation in the foreground
  • The orange, blue and purple roofs of the village
  • The vast green hill behind the houses
  • The white and blue bands of the sky
