View of Cap d'Antibes W1175hand painted reproduction

From Cape Antibes, the Mediterranean forms an intense blue band in front of the pink and snow-covered Alpes-Maritimes, while a rounded tree enlivens the foreground. Painted in 1888, this 65.4 × 80.6 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Hill-Stead Museum and corresponds to Wildenstein 1175.

Look at the work

Three climates overlap: the warm coast, the blue sea and the snow-capped Alps

Red, green and orange bushes occupy the bottom of the painting. The sea constitutes a very clear horizontal band, above which the mountains extend like a distant frieze.

The hot-cold contrast structures the entire view: pink and orange in the ground and peaks, deep blue in the water, green and purple in the central tree. The clear sky unifies these areas.

Monet brings together in the same look Mediterranean vegetation and alpine snow, two seasonal sensations which seem contradictory but belong to the panorama of Antibes.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A depth constructed in strips

First plant plan, sea and mountains follow one another almost in parallel. This simple organization highlights the differences in color and distance.

02

The tree as pivot

Its round crown cuts the maritime strip and visually connects the land to the Alps. Without it, the landscape would become too strictly horizontal.

03

The Antibes campaign of 1888

Monet produced several dozen views during his stay. He is looking for a palette bright enough to reflect a Mediterranean that he considers more intense than the light of the North.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1175 is used. The real WebP measures 800 × 651 px, the best reliable public definition identified for this version, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the deep blue sea

It must remain denser than the sky and the mountains. This dark band is the main interval between near and far.

Color02

Preserve the pink tops

Snow is not white: it receives heat from the sun and comes off with small pink and purple touches.

Matter03

Keeping the tree in a tight touch

The crown must remain vibrant and irregular, without becoming a compact ball. Its colors reflect those of the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Hill-Stead Museum documents View of Cape Antibes, oil on canvas from 1888, 65.4 × 80.6 cm, preserved in Farmington and listed as Wildenstein 1175.

Collection01

One of four paintings by Monet still in Hill-Stead

Alfred Atmore Pope was one of the first American collectors of Impressionism; his home today preserves this ensemble in its historical context.

Geography02

The Alpes-Maritimes seen beyond the sea

The panorama combines the Cape Coast, the Mediterranean and the snow-covered range, visible on a clear day behind the bay.

Version03

The Wildenstein 1175 canvas

Its rounded tree in the center, its blue sea and its long pink chain allow it to be distinguished from other views taken in Antibes in 1888.
