À propos de l’œuvre
Vue sur la mer à Scheveningen, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August 1882 · Scheveningen, The Hague, Netherlands
Sea view in Scheveningen, F4Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Under heavy gray clouds, a small boat struggles in the middle of a white sea of foam. Walkers, fishermen and a horse disperse on the beach: Van Gogh paints the storm directly facing the North Sea.
Look at the work
A rough sea dominates the figures of the beach
The dark boat is placed slightly to the left of the center, its mast carrying a small red and white flag. The waves follow one another in long gray, green and white bands.
On the shore, the characters are just small touches of color. A white horse and a cart appear on the right; above, the inclined clouds amplify the feeling of wind.
Sea View at Scheveningen F4/JH187 is an oil on paper mounted on canvas of 36.4 × 51.9 cm painted in August 1882. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0416M1990.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh describes in a letter a "wicked little storm" in which windswept sand sticks to damp paint. The material of the work thus retains a physical trace of the place.
The waves occupy the center
Their horizontal bands are broken by oblique ridges and large white impastos. They give the sea a disproportionate force compared to the tiny figures.
The boat stabilizes the storm
Its vertical mast and pavilion provide a clear marker in the middle of the movement. The dark hull prevents light waves from becoming a uniform surface.
The sky pushes to the right
The gray-blue brush strokes follow an oblique direction. The rhythm of the sky extends that of the foam and makes the wind feel throughout the composition.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The navy is F4/JH187, painted in Scheveningen in August 1882. The museum notice gives an oil on paper mounted on canvas, 36.4 × 51.9 cm, inventory s0416M1990.
Sand in the pictorial layer
Material analysis found grains of sand trapped in the paint. They confirm that Van Gogh worked on the beach in the wind.
Stolen in 2002, found in 2016
The painting was stolen from the Van Gogh Museum with another work, then found in Italy. After study and restoration, it returned to the Amsterdam collection.
One of the first ambitious oils
In the summer of 1882, Van Gogh had just purchased painting equipment. This navy already shows a desire to face pattern, weather and a very thick material.
