The Notre-Dame de Vernon church stands beyond the Seine, between a long light wall, a few houses and their reflections. Painted in 1883, this 65 × 81 cm oil on canvas is identified as Wildenstein 843 and kept at the Yamagata Museum of Art, on deposit with the Yoshino Gypsum Art Foundation.

Look at the work

Architecture becomes a clear vibration between the sky and the Seine

Monet places the church slightly to the left of the center. Its square tower dominates a strip of houses and vegetation, while the bank wall traces a stable horizontal which separates the city from its reflection.

The very pale blues of the sky and water envelop the ochres, pinks and grays of the stone. The surface of the river is not an exact mirror: vertical touches stretch the buildings and transform their architectural weight into moving light.

In W843, Vernon is not described stone by stone: the church is recognized by its silhouette, then dissolved in the air and in the double trembling of the Seine.

A monumental silhouette without rigidity

The tower and the buttresses organize the center of the composition, but their contours remain discontinuous. The small colored touches prevent the building from becoming a dark and closed mass.

Two superimposed horizons

The built bank occupies a narrow strip in the middle of the canvas. Below, the water takes up the verticals of the church and the trees; above, the sky opens up an almost limitless space.

The view from the opposite bank

The distance allows Monet to bring together in one view the church, the houses of Vernon and the calm width of the river. The human being becomes a simple accent of scale at the water's edge.

Differentiate between stone and reflection

On the church, short touches suggest masonry; in the water, they lengthen vertically. This difference in gesture makes the reflection credible without making it photographic.

The Gothic building, recognizable in its tower, dominates the bank front. Monet, however, reduces the detail so that light, and not architecture alone, remains the real subject.
