From the surroundings of Bordighera, Monet looks towards Ventimiglia and the Maritime Alps. The sea forms a cobalt blue band between nearby yellow and green foliage, and a mountain range whose blues dissolve in the air. The town appears in small light touches on the right slope, almost absorbed by the landscape. Signed and dated "Claude Monet 84" at the bottom right, this oil on canvas measuring 65.1 × 91.7 cm is kept in Kelvingrove under the number 2336. It corresponds to Wildenstein 878.

Look at the work

The Riviera is spread out in three colorful depths: nearby foliage, compact sea and mountains that have become almost as light as the sky

The foreground is occupied by a screen of shrubs whose greens are crossed by lemon yellows, ochres and blues. This vegetation cuts the coast and prevents a conventional panoramic reading. On the right only, a few white and pink facades lead towards Ventimiglia.

The sea is painted as an intense and relatively uniform strip, but its edge is tinged with turquoise. Beyond that, the mountains gradually lighten: ultramarine blue near the coast, lavender and white in the distant ridges. The sky takes on the same blues in large open touches.

The National Inventory notice specifies that Monet wanted to work alone after his first Mediterranean trip with Renoir. His stay in 1884, planned for one month, lasted three months and produced forty-five paintings, including this dated view of Ventimiglia.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The nearby foliage deliberately hides the path with its gaze

Instead of offering an open viewpoint, Monet places a plant mass in front of the sea. This obstruction gives immediate depth and makes the discovery of the city a discreet event.

The blue of the sea creates a stable hinge

Between the fragmented foreground and the misty mountains, the marine band brings a denser color and a horizontal rhythm. It maintains the balance of this very open composition.

03

Distance is built by the progressive loss of contrast

The nearby leaves are bright and separate; the city and the mountains come together in values. The distant chain retains its shape without hard outline, as if crossed by light.

Keep the foreground rich but not decorative

The yellows and greens must form credible masses of foliage. Too regular repetition of the keys would transform the plant screen into an ornamental pattern.

Preserve the deep blue sea strip

It should neither rise too high nor merge with the sky. Its saturation gives their full distance to the pale mountains and the houses of Ventimiglia.

Matter03

Keep the city at the limit of readability

The facades are present on the right slope, but they remain small and mixed with the rock. Excessive architectural detail would move the subject toward the city instead of the atmosphere.

Campaign01

One of the forty-five paintings from the Mediterranean stay of 1884

Monet returns to the Riviera alone in January and works until spring. He looks for patterns where palm trees, olive trees, sea and mountains force his palette to respond to a new light.

Registration02

Signed and dated Claude Monet 84 lower right

The inscription confirms the date and distinguishes W878 from another View of Ventimiglia, W879, kept in a private collection and built with a different foreground.

Provenance03

Presented in Glasgow by the Hamilton Trustees in 1943

Durand-Ruel owned the painting in 1888. After several visits between Paris, New York and London, the Hamilton Trustees acquired it from Arthur Tooth and Sons and donated it to the museum. It was notably exhibited in Venice in 1897.
