Claude Monet · Vétheuil · 1881 · W696

View of Vétheuil W696hand painted reproduction

From a hillside south of the village, Vétheuil appears between a white cliff and a slope covered with yellow grass. The bluish church rises in the center, partially hidden by green trees, while the valley dissolves under summer light. Painted in 1881, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 80.5 cm is kept at the Albertina under the number GE86DL and corresponds to Wildenstein 696.

Look at the work

The village observed through the slopes of the hillside

The composition plunges towards the church and the houses, then goes up towards the light cliff which blocks the bottom. On the right, a yellow embankment descends diagonally; in the center, a large dark tree hides part of the village and reinforces the impression of a high viewpoint.

The foreground combines yellow, green and small red touches. The church receives blue and purple, the cliffs white tinged with pink, green and azure. The saturation differences between the front and the distance make the air warm and bright.

Monet does not build Vétheuil like a front postcard: he lets the slopes, the trees and the heat of the air filter the view.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A depth organized by two diagonals

The cliff descends from the left while the yellow embankment rises from the right. Their meeting naturally directs the gaze towards the church.

02

A partially hidden village

Trees and grasses hide several buildings. This obstruction gives the sensation of a real observation from the hillside rather than a recomposed view.

03

A colorful intensity that decreases with distance

The yellows and greens are stronger in the foreground; they turn blue, pink and gray towards the cliff and the sky. The Albertina highlights this passage from near to far.

Composition01

Keep blue church in center

It must remain the village landmark without exceeding the colorful intensity of the foreground.

Color02

Preserve the big dark tree

Its mass connects the planes and prevents the clear cliff from flattening the entire composition.

Matter03

Keep the yellow slope to the right

Its warm touches are essential to capture the heat of summer and lead the eye towards Vétheuil.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Albertina documents View of Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1881, 65 × 80.5 cm, GE86DL inventory and Wildenstein 696 catalog.

Viewpoint01

A hillside located south of Vétheuil

Monet chose an elevated position towards the end of his stay in the village. The slopes thus frame the church and the valley instead of directly showing the Seine.

Atmosphere02

The warmth rendered by the intensity of the colors

The Albertina's instructions emphasize the transition from the vigorous yellows and greens of the foreground to the pastel tones of the distance, which makes the summer air sparkle.

Collection03

A work from the Batliner collection

The painting is numbered GE86DL and is part of the set presented by the Albertina in Vienna. It is listed as Wildenstein 696.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 696 version
  • The Vétheuil church in the center
  • The clear cliff on the left
  • The yellow embankment and the trees in the foreground
