The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute closes the Grand Canal in pink and blue light. In the foreground, a large mooring post stands slightly to the right, dark and oblique, like a measure placed in front of space. Around him, stone, sky and water respond to each other until the limits of the monument are almost fluid.
Look at the work
Monet constructs depth through three rhythms: the moving band of water, the clear facade of the Salute and the open sky. The brown post cuts these horizontals and gives the scale of the canal. The dome is placed to the left of the center, without dominating symmetrically.
The reflections are made of short touches, often vertical, which take up the blue of the sky and the roses of architecture. The purple shadows hollow out the volumes without closing the contours. The basilica appears both solid and dissolved, faithful to the humid light of Venice.
The mooring post suddenly brings the gaze closer, while the Salute retreats into a light where stone, air and water share the same colors.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet arrived in Venice with Alice in early October 1908 and remained there until December. He began thirty-seven paintings on the motif, then took them up at length in Giverny before presenting the whole in Paris in 1912.
In W1736, the Salute is not isolated as a monument. The palaces that line the canal, dome, campanile and water form a single atmospheric ensemble. The mooring post makes visible the distance between the viewer and this distant architecture.
Monet seeks the unity produced by air and light. Roses appear in the sky and water, blues pass over facades, and shadows turn purple. Faithful reproduction must preserve this circulation instead of assigning a fixed color to each object.

The single reference image measures 3,200 × 2,540 px. The public file of 3,464 px was reduced and encoded into real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The brown post constitutes the strongest contrast of the canvas. Its slight inclination animates the composition and prevents distant architecture from becoming a simple panorama.
The range is based on neighboring tones, connected by a purple gray. The small yellow areas warm the facades and give light without breaking the cold harmony.
In the water, the marks are more vertical and discontinuous. On the basilica, they follow the volumes, while the sky receives wider passages. The gesture changes, but the material remains visible everywhere.

This 1908 oil on canvas measures 73.7 × 92.4 cm. It belongs to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and is presented at the Legion of Honor.
Monet frames the monument from the water and holds a large post in the foreground. This choice gives a very concrete depth to an image whose contours are deliberately faded.
Like other views of the Venetian countryside, W1736 was worked on returning to the workshop. This cover allows Monet to unify the color without losing the precise sensation observed on the canal.
