Bunches of white and pink flowers unfold on a blue background covered with hatching. The large starry leaves, surrounded by darkness, surround the chestnut tree's candles in a composition without mud or horizon.

A branch crosses the canvas diagonally and bears several heavy clusters of small light flowers. Yellow, pink and blue highlights give volume to each candle without detailing all the corollas.
Webbed leaves open around the flowers, some deep green, others yellow or reddish. The blue-purple background remains fully visible between the stems; his tight brushstrokes make the space vibrate.
By removing the vase and depth, Van Gogh transforms the cut branches into a decorative screen of flowers, leaves and lines.

Blue is not a neutral flat. Curved hatching follows the stems and fills each interval with a steady movement.

Chestnut branches in bloom is an oil on canvas of 73 × 92 cm painted in Auvers in May 1890. The work F820, today inventoried BU 0053, belongs to the Emil Bührle Collection on long-term loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich.

Stolen with three other paintings in Zurich on February 10, 2008, the work was found nine days later in a car and returned without damage.
