Cave of Port-Domois W1114hand painted reproduction

In Port-Domois, a red and golden cliff juts out from the right and opens into a dark cavity flush with surprisingly calm seas. The successive promontories lead towards the blue horizon, while the sun shatters the rock in touches of yellow, pink, green and purple. This oil on canvas measuring 65 × 83 cm, painted in 1886, is kept at the Museum of Modern Art in Ibaraki under the number O-236 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1114.

Look at the work

A dark cave cut into the cliff in full sun

The main wall occupies the entire right half and advances above the water. Its almost black opening forms the deepest contrast of the canvas. On the left, two more distant capes gradually diminish and release a narrow strip of horizon.

The sea combines ultramarine blue, turquoise and green, in small, regular touches that indicate a less windy day. On the contrary, the rock receives wider impasto, mixing yellow, orange, pink, dark red and purple.

The subject is not just the cavity: it is the opposition between a compact shadow and a cliff crossed by sun, between the calm sea and the rough material of the stone.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A coastal diagonal that organizes depth

The capes follow one another from the large cliff on the right to the left horizon. Each retreat reduces contrasts and cools colors.

02

The cave as a point of maximum density

The dark opening is placed slightly to the right of the center and immediately catches the eye. It must remain linked to the wall, without becoming an artificially cut black shape.

03

Two opposing pictorial writings

The Ibaraki Museum highlights the small blue and green touches of the calm sea facing the large warm traces of the sunny rock. This difference in gesture makes the materials readable.

Composition01

Keep the large cliff all over the right edge

Its visual weight and its advance above the water give the power of W1114. Reducing it would open up the landscape too much.

Color02

Preserve the contrast of the dark cavity

The interior of the cave combines deep red, purple and brown, with some shades. Uniform black would remove its depth.

Matter03

Keep the sea calm but vibrant

The keys remain tight and horizontal without becoming smooth. Blues and greens should change near the rock and out to sea.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum of Modern Art in Ibaraki documents Cave at Port-Domois, oil on canvas from 1886, 65 × 83 cm, inventory O-236 and catalog Wildenstein 1114.

Weather01

A rare calm and bright day in Belle-Île

The museum notice contrasts this peaceful view with the numerous storm seascapes painted during the stay. The sun shines directly on the rock and the sea remains not very rough.

Color02

The warm light opposite the blue green of the water

Monet uses thick, warm touches on the cliff, then thinner, colder markings on the sea. The contrast builds both relief and atmosphere.

Collection03

A work kept in Mito under number O-236

The painting belongs to the Museum of Modern Art in Ibaraki Prefecture. The official notice gives the title Cave at Port-Domois, the year 1886 and the dimensions 65 × 83 cm.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1114 version
  • The dark cavity opened into the cliff
  • The succession of capes towards the left horizon
  • The blue and green sea under a calm light

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal navy is suitable for a living room, bedroom or office. A deep blue wall, warm sand or mineral pink and a dark brown frame reinforce the agreement between sea and cliff.
