The Girl, after Millet, F696Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Sitting in profile, a woman operates a spinning wheel in an interior reduced to a few pieces of furniture and bands of color. Van Gogh transforms Millet's domestic scene into a bright accord of blue, yellow, sea green and red.

Look at the work

The spinning wheel circle enlivens a silent room

The spinner is placed between a yellow chair seen from behind and the black wheel of the loom. Her blue bodice, light apron and long dark skirt form a compact vertical in the middle of the narrow format.

The floor is indicated by a few red and blue lines that converge under the chair. The very bright sea green wall reveals free touches around the head and the spinning wheel.

Three structures are enough to build the scene - chair, figure and wheel - but the complementary colors prevent the interior from becoming still.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Girl measures 40 × 25.5 cm and bears the references F696/JH1786. It was painted in September 1889 and is now in a private collection.

01

A figure compressed between two objects

The back of the chair and the wheel circle closely frame the body. This organization makes the work gesture immediately readable despite the small format.

02

Blue responds to yellow

The deep blue bodice stands out against the greenish wall, while the chair and some details of the spinning wheel introduce warm yellows that make the whole thing vibrate.

03

A perspective indicated by few lines

Van Gogh describes neither ceiling nor depth of the room. The furniture uprights and oblique scratches on the floor are enough to install the space around the spinner.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

La Filleuse F696/JH1786 is a 40 × 25.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Saint-Rémy in September 1889.

Source

A print after Millet

Van Gogh worked from a black and white reproduction. He compared this method to a translation: the composition remained recognizable, but the color became entirely his own.

Series

A cycle dedicated to rural work

The spinner joins the sowers, harvesters and peasants whom Van Gogh took over according to Millet during his stay in Saint-Paul-de-Mausole.

Provenance

Former Moshe Mayer collection

Old catalogs indicate the painting in Moshe Mayer's Geneva collection. Its current conservation is indicated as a private collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the leaning profile of the spinner, the black circle of the spinning wheel, the yellow chair, the blue bodice and the thin red diagonals of the floor.

  • The dark circle of the spinning wheel placed on the right
  • The intense blue of the bodice
  • The yellow back of the chair in the foreground
  • The red and blue touches that structure the floor
