Vincent van Gogh · 1886 · Montmartre, Paris

Look at the work

The pergola, street lamp and empty tables build a deep terrace

The large street lamp rises almost to the center. To the left and right, the trunks and wooden uprights repeat its vertical, while the curved branches form several arcs above the figures.

The tables in the foreground remain empty and arranged in a staggered pattern. They lead towards the groups installed at the back, where the figures merge with the trellises, fences and red touches of the foliage.

La Guinguette à Montmartre F238/JH1178 is a 50 × 64.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in 1886. The Musée d'Orsay preserves it under inventory RF 2243.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh balances an architecture of vertical, curved lines with quick touches that dissolve details. The light ground maintains the readability of this dense structure.

01

The street lamp shares the width without freezing it

Its green barrel is slightly offset to the right. It serves as an axis for the terrace while letting human groups distribute freely.

02

Empty tables give depth

Their gray-green trays gradually diminish and overlap with the benches. This rhythm leads the eye to the customers sitting under the arbor.

03

Vegetation becomes writing

Branches, trellises and leaves are rendered by black, green and red lines. Their network animates the upper half without hiding the facades.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay establishes the title, the date of 1886, the format of 50 × 64.5 cm and the inventory RF 2243; catalogs give F238/JH1178.

Montmartre

A terrace rather than a party scene

Van Gogh observes the layout of the place, its benches, its tables and its arbor. The few clients remain secondary to the construction of the space.

Collection

A bequest accepted by the state in 1915

Pierre Goujon bequeathed the work in memory of his father, Doctor Étienne Goujon. After Luxembourg and the Jeu de Paume, she was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Catalog

F238 and JH1178 identify this tavern

These references avoid confusing it with the numerous mills, cafes and views of Montmartre painted by Van Gogh during his stay in Paris.

  • The green street lamp in the center
  • The arches formed by the bare arbor
  • The inclined tops of the tables in the foreground
  • The clear waiter placed behind a table
  • Red accents scattered throughout the foliage
