Look at the work

The dream of an artists' studio painted like a neighborhood

Van Gogh rented part of the house at 2 place Lamartine and set up his workshop and then his rooms there. In the canvas, the yellow facade with green shutters occupies the center, but it is part of an entire environment: restaurant with a pink awning, streets, railway bridges and silhouettes.

The blue of the sky is placed in vertical touches and contrasts with the cream and yellow buildings. The light street widens in the foreground then divides around the houses. In the distance, a train and its steam recall the immediate proximity of Arles station.

The house became the concrete symbol of the "Studio du Midi", the project in which Van Gogh hoped to live and work with Gauguin and other artists.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition balances the central facade, the vast blue sky and the diagonals of the streets which open the square towards the station.

01

A yellow and green facade

The green shutters and door identify the part inhabited by Van Gogh. Their complementary color makes the yellow walls vibrate.

02

Place Lamartine

The streets form several clear triangles around the buildings. The small figures give the scale of this very open space.

03

The railway

The bridges and the train appear in the background on the right. They precisely locate the house near the station and introduce the modern city.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Inventory s0032V1962 and references F464/JH1589 identify the famous view of Place Lamartine painted at the end of September 1888.

Address

2 place Lamartine

Van Gogh first rented the rooms on the ground floor in May 1888, then converted the upstairs bedrooms before Gauguin's arrival.

Project

The Studio du Midi

He hoped to make this house a collective workplace; Gauguin stayed there for nine weeks in the fall of 1888.

History

House disappeared

The building was badly damaged during a bombing in 1944 and then demolished; the painting retains its most famous view.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the opposition of yellow and blue, the perspective of the streets and the tiny details of the train and passers-by.

  • The yellow facade with green shutters and door
  • The pink awning of the neighboring restaurant
  • The clear diagonals of Place Lamartine
  • The train and the smoke in the background on the right
  • The deep blue sky constructed by vertical touches
