Reproduction details

Claude Monet · 1924 -1925 · yellow, mauve and foliage of Giverny

Yellow and purple iriseshand painted reproduction

Iris leaves crisscross across the entire width; yellow flowers emerge in the center and a small purple shoot responds from the lower right corner, in a composition almost without soil or horizon.

Look at the work

A network of leaves leads the gaze from yellow to purple

Preserved at the Marmottan Monet Museum under number 5083, the canvas adopts a very horizontal format. The leaves form a continuous network of curves, loops and diagonals which fills the surface without revealing a distinct horizon.

The yellow irises are concentrated around the central third, but Monet refuses the frontal bouquet. Some flowers are almost drowned in greens; others are only indicated by a few touches of lemon. At the bottom right, the purple flowers create a smaller, colder counterpoint, essential for the balance of the palette.

The title names two colors of flowers, but the real subject is rhythm: the leaves lead the eye from a yellow apparition to a distant purple note.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of yellow and purple irises - Claude Monet
01

A field without horizon

Vegetation fills the entire frame. The absence of a clearly separate sky brings the composition closer to a panoramic setting or an abstract surface.

02

Yellow as a mobile home

Several flowers occupy the center without forming a block. The gaze passes from one to the other following the curving leaves.

03

Purple as a lateral response

The small flowering on the right edge appears secondary, but it balances the yellows and connects the purples on the bottom to the colder greens.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The yellows caught in the foliage - detail of Yellow and Purple Iris - Claude Monet
The yolks caught in the foliageThe detail shows lemon yellows, ochres and light greens superimposed on darker leaves. The flowers are never surrounded evenly.
The purple note of the right edge - detail of yellow and purple irises - Claude Monet
The purple note of the right edgeThe purple group appears among very curved blue and green lines. Its small size makes its color all the more precise and precious.

The official image of the Marmottan Monet Museum reaches 1500 × 1001 px. Details of 900 × 800 px and 850 × 700 px come directly from this source, without artificial enlargement. All three files are in real WebP.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Long curved leaves without simplifying them
  • The variety of yolks at the center of the composition
  • The discreet mauves of the lower right edge
  • The pale blue light that circulates between the plants
