À propos de l’œuvre
Les Roses roses, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
The Pink RosesReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Van Gogh frames a rose bush so close that neither mud, nor soil, nor horizon are visible. Pale roses, sometimes barely pink, stand out in the middle of a network of green leaves and dark stems.
Look at the work
A rose bush seen as a fragment of tapestry
The flowers occupy a diagonal that descends from the top left to the bottom right. Some are very open and show a yellow heart; others remain in bud, surrounded by dark green leaves.
The medium green background merges with the foliage. The black-brown contours outline the stems, while the petals are made of whites, salmon pink and small gray-green shadows. There is no element to establish a precise scale.
By removing any context, Van Gogh transforms a simple rose bush into a continuous pattern where flowers, leaves and background share the same surface.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work MIN 1836 can be recognized by its horizontal format, its entirely green background and its pale roses distributed without visible vase.
A framing without a single center
No rose absolutely dominates. The gaze circulates from one flower to another following the curved stems and irregular intervals of the foliage.
Colorful whites
The petals are never pure white: pink, cream, gray green and sometimes blue shape them. These shades avoid any uniform decorative effect.
The outline organizes the foliage
Dark lines separate leaves and branches from the green background. They give the composition an almost graphic structure despite the flexibility of the flowers.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Les Roses roses is an oil on canvas measuring 32 × 40.5 cm painted in Auvers in June 1890. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek preserves it under the inventory MIN 1836; the catalogs indicate F595 and JH2009.
MIN 1836
The current issue of Glyptotek is MIN 1836. It is confirmed by documentary bases and loan lists; MIN 1843, sometimes published online, should not be retained.
The Helge Jacobsen Collection
The painting was part of the collection of modern French paintings assembled by Helge Jacobsen and intended to enrich the Glyptotek in Copenhagen.
A rose bush, not a vase
The title still life can be confusing: the canvas shows no containers. Van Gogh directly isolates the flowers and foliage of the rose bush.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The painter must preserve the very fine differences between white, pink and gray green, as well as the dark contours which maintain the structure of the rose bush.
- Open roses arranged diagonally
- Pale pimples near the edges
- The black-brown stems that connect the entire pattern
- The green background fused with the foliage

A horizontal floral pattern with deep greens
The small format is suitable for a bedroom, an office or a set of botanical paintings. Powder roses soften an interior while the dominant green dialogues with natural wood.
