Seventeen-year-old Guurtje van de Stadt stands in a black white-collar dress. Her light face, earrings and ribbon tied around her neck emerge from a freely brushed gray-brown background. Amid the landscapes painted by Monet during his stay in Zaandam, this isolated portrait combines the restraint of a family presentation with an already very mobile material.

Young woman in black stands out from almost abstract background

The model is seen mid-body, turned slightly to the right, but her gaze returns to the viewer. The black dress descends into a large vertical shape and absorbs some of the details. The white collar, earring and dark ribbon structure the facial area with great economy.

Around the head and shoulders, the background is animated by brown, gray, green and ocher passages which do not describe any precise interior. Monet leaves several visible gestures near the hair and sleeves, while the face, hands and edges of the garment are treated with greater precision.

The sobriety of the dress focuses all the attention on the face, but the free touch of the background prevents the portrait from closing into a conventional pose.

A long silhouette in a narrow format

The reduced width of the canvas reinforces the vertical axis of the body. The head, hand and edge of the dress form a series of light dots which enliven this large black mass.

A deliberately contained contrast

The black of the garment is never uniform: browns, grays and green reflections modulate the surface. The white of the collar and the complexion become luminous without appearing dazzling.

Facial precision, freedom of the edges

The eyes, mouth and jewelry are placed attentively. As you move away from the face, the touches widen and blend in with the background.

The surrounding surface retains visible brushstrokes and open transitions. Its vibration gives air to the dark outline of the model.

The Kroeller-Müller museum preserves this portrait of 73.2 × 40 cm under the inventory KM 107.247; it bears number 192 of the Wildenstein catalog.

Model01

Guurtje van de Stadt, seventeen years old

The young woman belongs to a family of rich timber merchants from Zaandam. His father Jan died shortly before the painting was made, a circumstance sometimes close to the black outfit and the reserve of the pose.

Exception02

The only portrait of the stay in Zaandam

Monet created approximately twenty-four landscapes and urban views during his Dutch months of 1871. The representation of Guurtje is the only known portrait within this group.

Museum03

A work from the Kroeller-Müller collection

The painting is today kept in Otterlo under number KM 107.247. Its restoration made it possible to find a clearer reading of the dark nuances and the treatment of the background.
