Demi-figure d'ange (d'après Rembrandt, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · September 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Angel, based on a work attributed to Rembrandt, F624Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A winged figure advances in an almost entirely blue space, its head bowed and its arms open. Van Gogh transforms a print based on a painting then given to Rembrandt into an apparition constructed by light, cold color and the rays of the brush.

Look at the work

A white apparition in a space of blue

The red-haired face stands out in the center, surrounded by a halo formed of light blue and white lines. The tunic fades down, while the two sleeves extend the movement towards the edges.

The wings are suggested by large oblique areas, lighter than the background. Two dark blue vertical bands frame the scene and make the angel appear on the threshold of a bright space.

The figure does not stand out with a clear outline: it seems to arise from the same blue material as the background, thanks to the converging directions of the key.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Ange F624/JH1778 is an oil on canvas of 54 × 64 cm painted in September 1889. The work belongs to a private collection.

01

The halo is painted like radiation

Lineage goes around the head in all directions. This circular structure concentrates light without resorting to a traditional golden disk.

02

An almost monochrome range

Cobalt blue, turquoise, white and a few purples dominate. Reddish-brown hair and pale face constitute the rare warm accents of the composition.

03

The key replaces the pattern

The tunic and wings are not described by continuous shadows. The brushstrokes, aligned with the folds and feathers, directly construct the volumes.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Ange F624/JH1778 was painted in Saint-Rémy in September 1889. The canvas measures 54 × 64 cm and is in a private collection.

Source

A print sent by Theo

Theo had sent Vincent an engraving by Charles Courtry reproducing an Angel Study sold in Paris in June 1889. Van Gogh worked from this printed image.

Attribution

A work then given to Rembrandt

The model was attributed to Rembrandt in the 19th century. The source painting was then compared to Barent Fabritius then to Aert de Gelder; the historical title after Rembrandt has remained in use.

Interpretation

Color completely reinvented

The print only provided a scale of values. Van Gogh himself chose the blues, whites and reds which transformed the figure into a luminous apparition.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the blue scale, the radiant halo, the inclined red head, the streaked white tunic and the two dark bands which frame the apparition.

  • The luminous features that radiate around the face
  • Red hair, the only frankly warm accent
  • The large clear diagonals of the wings
  • The superimposed blues of the background and the tunic
