Three millstones occupy a recently cut field in Giverny. The largest advance in the foreground, heavy and golden brown, while two smaller shapes retreat towards a row of poplars. Above, the stretched clouds and agitated peaks give the landscape a mobility that the stable mass of the millstones retains. Painted in 1884, this oil on canvas measuring 66.1 × 81.3 cm is kept at the Pola Museum of Art under number 006-0207. It corresponds to Wildenstein 902.
Look at the work
The composition is based on three sizes and three distances. The large millstone on the right almost cuts the line of the trees; the one on the left remains lower, and the third, placed between the two, marks the passage towards the bottom. This triangle arrangement avoids alignment and makes the expanse of the meadow felt without resorting to a drawn perspective.
The field is never a uniform green. Lemon yellows, tender greens, ochres and small pink touches intersect around the millstones. The trees combine deep greens, blues and whites, while the sky receives long cream streaks. The contours remain open: straw, grass, foliage and cloud are defined by the direction and density of the key.
The Art Institute of Chicago's scientific catalog places W902 among three landscapes from 1884 devoted to millstones. This painting therefore precedes the twenty-five millstones of 1890 -1891 by several years and shows that Monet had already identified the full potential of the motif.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Its top extends beyond the center line and its right edge approaches the frame. It appears close without being isolated: the colors of the field rise in the straw and the blue-green shadow of its base connects it to the ground.
Their thin trunks and spaced crowns build a vertical bottom, but the height changes with each tree. Sky gaps prevent this plant border from closing the landscape.
The long pale touches of the clouds respond to the yellow and green gestures of the grass. The composition contrasts the round volumes of the millstones with an environment that seems to be traversed by the wind.

The single image exactly represents inventory 006-0207. The official Pola Museum of Art file measures 1,500 × 1,214 px; it remains at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, then is encoded in real WebP.
The difference in scale between the grinding wheels must remain clear: a large shape on the right, a second on the left and a small one in the center. Their hierarchy constructs the entire depth of W902.
The meadow combines yellow, green, ocher and blue. A homogeneous green would eliminate variations in sunlight and the colored continuity between grass and straw.
Browns, reds and oranges must remain fragmented. Too smooth contours would transform these piles of straw into closed objects and suppress their vibration on contact with air.

Monet had already painted millstones in 1884, 1885 and 1886. W902 belongs to the first known group, six years before he systematically took up the motif according to the times and the seasons.
Monet moved to Giverny in 1883. Nearby crops, poplars and millstones immediately became a repertoire of shapes where he could observe changes in light without leaving the surrounding countryside.
The painting is numbered 006-0207 at the Pola Museum of Art. The museum confirms its date, technique, format and exhibition in the gallery dedicated to its Western collections.
