Grindstone in the evening sunhand painted reproduction

An isolated millstone casts a long purple shadow on a still bright field. The blue hills and houses of Giverny close the horizon, while the very pale sky increases the contrast of the pattern. The canvas measures 38.5 × 52 cm and belongs to the Gösta Serlachius Foundation.

Look at the work

A compact grinding wheel that measures end-of-day light

The top of the millstone cuts the line of hills and imposes a simple volume in the center left. Its base blends into a triangular shadow that stretches to the foreground. This shift in shadow indicates low light coming from the right without directly showing the sun.

Red browns, purples and slate blue shape the millstone; the field mixes green gray, pink and pale yellow. At the rear, a few trees and roofs are painted on a reduced scale, legible enough to locate the scene but deliberately secondary.

Evening light not only illuminates the millstone: it enlarges its shadow and transforms the entire field into a colorful dial.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A small format work

With its 38.5 × 52 cm, this canvas is more compact than large horizontal wheels close to 65 × 100 cm. The tight framing reinforces the presence of the central volume.

02

A signature revealed under the painting

A hyperspectral study carried out in 2014 made it possible to read a signature of Monet under a pictorial layer, bringing an important material element to the history of the attribution.

03

A major piece of the Serlachius collection

Acquired by the Finnish foundation in the mid-20th century, the painting is today presented among the flagship works of the Serlachius Museum in Mänttä.

Only one image is used: the exact photograph of the work Serlachius, converted into a real WebP of 1,481 × 1,089 px without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A shadow that structures the lower half

The purple shadow should remain attached to the base of the grinding wheel and widen towards the viewer. It gives the foreground its depth and direction.

Color02

The contrast between warm earth and cold horizon

The brown reds of the millstone contrast with the blues of the hills and trees. Reproduction must preserve this contrast without saturating the evening tones.

Matter03

A dense material in the center, lighter around

The impasto of the millstone makes its volume more tangible, while the sky and distant planes remain thinner and more open.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Serlachius documents this Meule in the evening sun as an oil on canvas by Claude Monet dated 1891 and measuring 38.5 × 52 cm.

Collection01

Gösta Serlachius Foundation

The original is kept in Mänttä, Finland, where it is one of the few Monets accessible in a Nordic collection.

Scientific examination02

Hyperspectral imaging in 2014

The technique made it possible to distinguish information covered by visible layers, including a signature that was not readable with the naked eye.

Pattern03

A millstone and its shadow in Giverny

The seemingly stable subject serves to compare the fleeting effects of time, season and atmosphere on the same form.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The original small format of 38.5 × 52 cm
  • The off-center millstone and its long triangular shadow
  • The purples of the foreground versus the blues of the horizon
  • The difference in material between the pattern and the pale sky

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The horizontal format and muted palette match a desk, bookcase or small living room wall. Walnut, bluish gray and terracotta-colored textiles reveal its contrasts without hardening the sky.
