Grindstone, sunset, winter W1282hand painted reproduction

A dark millstone stands out against a frosty field where the sunset mixes orange, pink and purple. This oil on canvas of 65 × 92 cm, kept in a private collection, is Wildenstein 1282, often entitled Grindstone, sunset, winter.

Look at the work

The last sun turns frost into color

The large millstone occupies the left part, slightly in front of a second, smaller shape located near the farm. Its red-brown volume blocks the light and casts a purple-blue shadow towards the foreground. The low line of the horizon leaves a decisive band of light in the sky.

Monet contrasts the warm tones of the sunset with the cold mauves of the frozen field. Colors are not only found in the sky: pinks, oranges and blues also mingle in the snow, so the ground seems to reflect the atmosphere rather than remaining white.

W1282 makes cold a harmony of colors: the wheel absorbs heat from the sun while frost reflects its last light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A work from the strict Meules series

W1282 belongs to the group of twenty-five paintings W1266 to W1290 started after the harvest of 1890 in Clos Morin, near Monet's house in Giverny.

02

A very brief effect to grasp

The winter sunset changes in a few minutes. Monet works several paintings in parallel then takes them back to the workshop, in order to preserve the light relationships observed without transforming the scene into a documentary study.

03

A now private version

The catalog gives 65 × 92 cm and Wildenstein 1282. No public institution is documented as current owner; the description therefore avoids any uncertain museum attribution.

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the documented public reproduction of W1282, converted to a true WebP of 1280 × 918 px at its native resolution, without any artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A dark but colorful silhouette

The wheel brings together brown, burgundy, purple and very muted green. It should not become a uniform black mass, because its internal touches give it volume and texture.

Color02

A warm sky with several stripes

Yellow near the horizon rises to orange, pink then lilac. Keeping these transitions open allows the setting sun to further illuminate the entire scene.

Matter03

Pink and blue frost

The soil is built in small crossed touches of pale pink, mauve, blue and ocher. Their balance suggests a frozen surface without using dominant pure white.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The reference documents an oil on canvas from 1891, 65 × 92 cm, kept in a private collection and cataloged Wildenstein 1282.

Catalog01

Wildenstein 1282

The number places the canvas between a Grindstone under overcast weather and the effects of thaw, mist and sun which close the series.

Season02

Winter sunset

The cold palette of the field, the long shadow and the warm band on the horizon define an end-of-day effect during the cold season.

Pattern03

The gerbiers of Clos Morin

These are wheat shepherds protected by a thatched blanket, not simple piles of hay. Their stable mass serves as a measure of light changes.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version W1282 of the Meules series
  • The original format of 65 × 92 cm
  • The tall purple-brown silhouette and its cold shadow
  • The gradual transition from yellow to pink then to lilac

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Powder pinks, purples and deep brown give an enveloping atmosphere to a bedroom or living room. Dark wood, beige linen and warm lighting bring out the frost without hardening the scene.
