Artwork description
Claude Monet · Chantemesle · 1880 · W588
At the foot of a steep rock, the houses of the hamlet of Chantemesle crowd together along a pale path. The gables, stone walls and irregular roofs stand out between a tall dark fireplace and the purplish-brown cliff. Painted in 1880, this 59.7 × 80 cm oil on canvas is kept between a tall dark fireplace and the purplish-brown cliff. Painted in 1880, this 59.7 × 80 cm oil on canvas is kept at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta under number 2019.151 and corresponds to Wildenstein 588.

Look at the work
The road occupies almost the entire width of the foreground before leading the view towards the central houses. On the left, a dark construction and its chimney form a vertical upright; on the right, the embankment rises to the cliff and closes the hamlet.
Monet contrasts the bluish grays of the sky and the ground with the red earths, ochres and mauves of the rock. The facades are not drawn by rigid contours: their volumes are born from superimposed touches which change with the light.
The scale of the rock is understood by contrast: the houses remain small and fragmented, while the slope rises out of the frame like a continuous mass.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The large, clear space in the foreground gives air to the hamlet and leads towards the group of houses without resorting to a strong line of flight.
The dark building on the left and the cliff on the right tighten the center. The light roofs thus become the bright focus of the landscape.
The road receives long, soft touches, the houses more square accents and the rock a bumpy dough. These variations make the depth tangible.
Reference image
The only available reference image is kept at its native definition of 1024 × 758 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
Its clear expanse must remain dominant in the foreground so that the view gradually enters the hamlet.
The walls mix beige, blue, pink and green; a uniform white would erase their vibration and their relationship to the sky.
The brown, mauve and blue touches must retain their breaks to distinguish the rock from the plant embankment.
Documented benchmarks
The High Museum of Art documents The Hamlet of Chantemesle at the foot of the rock, oil on canvas from 1880, 23 1/2 × 31 1/2 inches, 2019 inventory.151 and Wildenstein catalog 588.
Monet then worked in the Seine valley and transformed this small rural complex dominated by relief into a very readable construction of plans.
The painting entered the High Museum of Art with this major ensemble and has since been in inventory number 2019.151.
The High Museum notice currently places the painting on level 2, gallery 205, which confirms its status as a work presented to the public.
