Still water between two bare banks

The left bank enters largely into the foreground, painted with brown earth, gray greens and some traces of vegetation. Two tiny silhouettes stand out near the edge; their position suggests fishing and gives a human measure to this very open landscape.

Beyond the channel, Marante Island forms a low strip punctuated with poplars. Their light trunks and dark crowns repeat up to the right edge. The overcast sky occupies almost half of the canvas and is reflected in blue-gray water, almost without waves.

Monet makes a modest site a study of distance and silence: the gaze advances slowly from the bare bank towards the poplars drowned in the mist.
