Harengs fumés, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1886 · Paris

Smoked herring, F203Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Three golden herrings occupy an almost black space: one hangs vertically, two rest in the foreground. Van Gogh uses their shiny skin to reveal intense yellows and blue highlights in a very dark still life.

Look at the work

A hanging herring responds to the two fish lying in the foreground

The central vertical leads from the hanging link to the fish's head. Below, the two lying herrings open in a fan shape and occupy the width without additional accessories.

The black background contains blues and browns visible in the brush strokes. The scales receive touches of yellow, ocher and cream which give the smoked fish its characteristic shine.

Smoked Herring F203/JH1123 is a 45.6 × 38 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris during the summer of 1886. The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves it under the inventory KM 101.004.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The composition contrasts a golden material with a colorful darkness. The thick touch individualizes the edges, fins and reflections without seeking a smooth description.

01

The vertical gives tension to the subject

The hanging fish appears to weigh on its link and crosses the central area. Its position transforms a simple dietary study into a strongly oriented composition.

02

Yellow appears brighter thanks to blue

Blue notes appear in draperies and shadows. They contrast in reinforcing the yellows and ochres of the smoked skin.

03

Impasto reflects the brilliance of the scales

The thick touches catch the light on the sides. They evoke the irregular shine of the fish without multiplying the naturalistic details.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The instructions from the Kroeller-Müller Museum specify the format of 45.6 × 38 cm, the date of summer 1886 and the inventory KM 101.004.

Subject

"Bokking", smoked herring

The museum reminds us that Dutch smoked herring is appreciated for its golden brown color, a quality that Van Gogh uses here as a pictorial motif.

Paris

A more lively palette than that of Nuenen

Although the subject is reminiscent of Dutch studies, the bold yellow, blues and thick material place the work in the Parisian transition.

Influence

A touch close to Adolphe Monticelli

The museum brings together the impasto of Van Gogh's admiration for Monticelli, a Provençal painter renowned for his dense layers of color.

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the three fish, the vertical suspension, the golden yellows, the blue reflections, the visible edges and the depth of the dark background.

  • The bond and the head of the hanging herring
  • The two fish lying in a fan shape
  • Yellow touches on the sides
  • The blue notes hidden in the background
  • The red signature in the upper left corner
