Broussailles, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Brush, F746Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Ivy-covered trunks emerge from an almost continuous carpet of leaves and spots of light; Van Gogh frames the asylum garden so close that the space dissolves into thousands of colorful touches.

Look at the work

The undergrowth without sky or horizon

Three dark trunks rise from the left half and are surrounded by ivy. On the ground, plants and small flowers fill the frame right down to the corners.

Pale yellow areas mark the filtered light between the trees. The short touches of green, blue, red and purple oppose the long sinuous lines of the trunks.

The Van Gogh Museum identifies this corner of the garden of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole as F746, painted in July 1889. Van Gogh then wrote to Theo that he was working on a new canvas with ivy.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The horizontal format of 73 × 92.3 cm, inventory s0051V1962 and references F746/JH1762 correct the incorrect orientation of the old product image.

01

A radical framing

Neither sky nor horizon gives any reference. The viewer is placed flush with the vegetation, in a surface which seems to continue beyond the edges.

02

Two families of keys

Leaves and bright flashes are painted in small free marks; trunks and vines use longer lines which structure the whole.

03

Spotlight light

Van Gogh does not illuminate the entire undergrowth evenly. Cream and yellow beaches appear between the deep greens like moving gaps.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official sheet precisely links the canvas to the shaded garden of the Saint-Rémy asylum.

Location

The Asylum Garden

Van Gogh explores every corner of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole and transforms this simple ivy carpet into an independent subject.

Letter

"A short story with ivy"

The artist mentions the current painting directly to Theo, which helps clarify the motif and period of creation.

Orientation

A large horizontal format

The original measures 73 × 92.3 cm; the official image restores the correct direction of the trunks and vegetation.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the density of the undergrowth, the long lines of the trunks and the extreme variety of the small touches without transforming the scene into uniform mass.

  • The three dark trunks covered in ivy
  • Creamy yellow spots of light
  • Emerald green leaves
  • Red and purple accents on the floor
  • The vines that meander between the plants
