Vincent van Gogh June 1888 · Plaine de la Crau, near Arles
Under a bluish green sky, the yellow plain of Crau brings together carts, millstones, ladders and harvesters, with the ruins of Montmajour on the horizon.
Look at the work
Van Gogh paints the summer harvest from a slightly high point. The fields form large yellow and green bands; a blue cart, conical millstones, piles of sheaves and small figures distribute the work across the entire width.
The mountain and the abbey of Montmajour appear in the distance, almost melted into blue. In the foreground, a light fence and a strip of cut wheat separate the viewer from the plain. Color orders the scene even more than the drawing: golden yellow, blue, olive green and brick red.
Van Gogh does not paint a spectacular moment, but the sum of the gestures of the harvest: each tool, each figure and each pile of wheat finds its place in the plain.
Composition, touch and color
The reproduction must keep the horizontal amplitude, the multitude of small patterns and the clear hierarchy between foreground, plain and horizon.
Activities are distributed like signs: blue cart, millstones, ladders, sheaves and workers. Their exact position makes the scene readable.
Several yellows coexist, from pale wheat to the ochres of the millstones. Greens and blues separate them to avoid a uniform surface.
The Alpilles and Montmajour remain low and bluish. This discretion gives its full extent to the Crau plain.
Documented benchmarks
F412/JH1440 is the large painting from June 1888 kept at the Van Gogh Museum, sometimes titled La Crau or Harvest in La Crau.
The presence of the blue cart and Montmajour distinguishes this work from other harvest scenes painted in the same summer.
The painting belongs to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation and is kept at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
After the spring orchards, Van Gogh chose the harvest to translate the Provençal summer into yellow and blue.
Your reproduction
The difficulty comes from profusion: every detail must remain visible without weakening the large bands of color that carry the composition.
