The Harvest, field with harvester, F619Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A tiny harvester works in a field bathed entirely in yellow, under a round sun and the pale ridges of the Alpilles. This tight version of the pattern seen from the hospital transforms the harvest into a luminous and meditative vision.

Look at the work

Death depicted in a golden light

The field occupies almost the entire canvas. Rounded sheaves and strips of wheat punctuate the foreground; the harvester, to the left of the center, is only indicated by a few light and blue touches.

A horizontal wall separates the harvest from buildings and mountains. The yellow sun floats in a sky streaked with cream and lilacs, without dramatic shadow or darkness.

The figure is small but symbolically central: alone in the immense yellow of the field, it gives a human measure to the harvest cycle.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Museum Folkwang keeps La Moisson under inventory G 62. This oil on canvas of 59.5 × 72.5 cm bears F619/JH1792.

01

Yellow covers almost the entire surface

The field, the sun and much of the sky belong to the same luminous family. The blues and lilacs of the mountains, however, prevent the whole from becoming uniform.

02

A silhouette reduced to the essentials

The harvester is neither portrayed nor detailed. Its curved body, its scythe and its isolated position are enough to make the work readable among the sheaves.

03

Strips to build depth

The sheaves in the foreground, the low wall, the buildings and the Alpilles form four superimposed levels. This calm structure balances the agitated matter of the wheat.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Harvest F619/JH1792 was painted in September 1889. It is kept at the Museum Folkwang under number G 62.

Window

The field behind St. Paul's Hospital

Van Gogh observed this plot from his room and painted it at several stages of agricultural work, from green wheat to cut and plowed fields.

Symbol

The reaper as the image of death

In a letter to Theo, Van Gogh brings the harvest closer to the end of life, but insists on a sad-free death, accomplished in full light under a golden sun.

Collection

Acquired in 1902 for the Museum Folkwang

Karl Ernst Osthaus purchased the painting for the Hagen Museum in 1902. The work has belonged to the Folkwang Museum in Essen since 1922 and bears inventory G 62.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the immense yellow field, the thick sheaves, the small harvester, the low wall, the Lilac Alpilles and the solar disk placed in the sky.

  • The light harvester almost absorbed by the wheat
  • The rounded sheaves of the foreground
  • The line of the low wall behind the field
  • The yellow sun and the lilac mountains
