Fécamp cliffhand painted reproduction

A high chalky wall descends from the upper right edge to a green and white sea. In the center, a dark promontory receives the shock of the waves, while a light rock in the foreground seems to advance in the foam. Dated 1897 by the Musée d'Orsay - the Wildenstein catalog locating it in 1896 - this oil on canvas of 65 × 100 cm is kept in Paris under the number MNR 223.

The Normandy cliff in direct contact with rough seas

The wide format is divided between the open sea on the left and the cliff which closes the entire right side. A light rock occupies the central bottom, then the coast forms a succession of projections towards the horizon. The gray sky almost merges with the offshore line.

The sea combines pale green, turquoise, blue gray and white. On the cliff, vertical touches of green, pink and purple cross the chalk. The foam, very thick near the rocks, visually connects the wall to the movement of the water.

The cliff is not a stable mass opposite the sea: its colors, streaks and edges themselves seem dissolved by humid air and sea spray.

A dating documented by two references

The notice from the Musée d'Orsay dates the work to 1897 and indicates that Daniel Wildenstein placed it in 1896. The sheet retains this documentary nuance.

The official notice retains both designations. The landscape belongs to Monet's research on the cliffs of the Normandy coast in the late 1890s.

A work National Museums Recovery

Found in Germany after the Second World War, the painting was entrusted to the custody of national museums in 1950. It bears the number MNR 223.

Conservation03

Assigned to the Musée d'Orsay

After being deposited in Nice then in Agen, the work returns to the Musée d'Orsay in 2021. The official notice gives its current location in Paris.
