Jardin des Tuileries, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · The Tuileries garden seen from rue de Rivoli · Musée d'Orsay

The Tuileries, sketch W403hand painted reproduction

Seen from a high floor, the Tuileries garden unfolds in wide green and light bands. An autumn tree occupies the foreground, tiny walkers circulate around the pool and the massifs extend towards a line of trees which almost hides the town. Monet quickly notes the organization of the garden, the yellow light of the sky and the movement of the figures in a sketch signed and dated 1875.

Look at the work

A bird's eye view reduces walkways, trees and walkers to great colorful rhythms

The tree in the foreground rises from the left edge and bears touches of yellow, green and orange. Behind him, a strip of water or light soil crosses the composition. Several small figures, some accompanied by umbrellas, punctuate the paths without interrupting their continuity.

The garden extends towards a dark green curtain of trees placed high in the canvas. Beyond, a few silhouettes of buildings and fireplaces dissolve in a cream light. The shapes are not stopped: open contours and visible repetitions preserve the character of study on the painting.

Sketching doesn't just simplify the detail; it reveals the structure of the garden, its horizontal bands and the circulation of light between the trees.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A look from Victor Chocquet's apartment

Monet has been painting the Tuileries since 198, rue de Rivoli. This height transforms the garden into an organized surface and allows you to simultaneously observe the paths, ponds, walkers and treetops.

02

An urban scene without a central monument

The city remains almost hidden by vegetation. Interest is focused on the design of the routes and the relationships between greens, pinks and yellows rather than on recognizable Parisian architecture.

03

The active status of the sketch

The quick touch and certain areas with little coverage do not indicate an unfinished work in the weak sense. They concentrate the vision on the main masses and have earned the painting an independent presentation since 1877.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to the RF 2705 inventory of the Musée d'Orsay and Wildenstein number 403. Its native definition of 1,220 × 811 px was preserved during WebP encoding, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Orange touches structure the nearby tree

They are not distributed evenly but concentrate on certain branches and at the edge of green masses. This irregularity maintains the light and depth of the foliage.

Color02

Walkers remain simple accents

A few vertical lines, dark dots and small colors describe their presence. Excessively detailing them would destroy the plunging scale and character of the study.

Matter03

The sky retains a pale heat

Creams, yellows and pinkish grays link the top of the canvas to the light paths. A cold white would isolate the vegetation and cause the atmospheric unit to lose.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas measuring 50 × 75.5 cm is signed and dated Claude Monet 75 lower left. The Musée d'Orsay keeps it under inventory RF 2705; it is classified Wildenstein 403 and dated around 1876.

Series01

One of the studies carried out from rue de Rivoli

Monet works from the apartment of collector Victor Chocquet, at 198 rue de Rivoli. He presents the point of view in several paintings and sketches devoted to the Tuileries garden.

Exposure02

Third Impressionist Exhibition of 1877

The Musée d'Orsay documents its presentation at the Durand-Ruel gallery under number 105. The status of sketch is therefore part of the public reception of the work, and not a simple work remaining in the workshop.

Provenance03

Acquired by Gustave Caillebotte in May 1877

Caillebotte kept the painting until his death. Accepted by the State with its legacy in 1896, it passed through Luxembourg, the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume before its assignment to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the plunging viewpoint.
  • Keep figures small and scattered.
  • Keep the outlines of the sketch open.
  • Distribute the yellows and greens without leveling the trees.

A palette designed with the room

This Parisian view is suitable for a living room, dining room or office. A light oak, bronze green or matte gold frame accompanies the tones of the garden; soft light reveals the pink and yellow passages of the surface.
