Look at the work

The actual work, seen with its setting at the museum

The photograph renders the entire painting in the center of a richly sculpted frame. It immediately makes the small format of the original and the density of the face noticeable in an area of only 41 × 30.5 cm.

Inside the frame, the light cap first catches the eye, then the eyes pointing to the right and the black shawl. The surrounding gilding warms the ochres of the face without belonging to the painted composition.

The painting visible in this photograph is F80/JH681, inventoried BU 0052: an oil on canvas mounted on a 41 × 30.5 cm panel, made in Nuenen in March 1885 and preserved in Zurich.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The situational view completes the isolated reproduction of the work: it documents the scale, the presence of the frame and the way in which the small portrait captures attention on a museum wall.

01

Frame reveals true scale

The sculpted surroundings show how compact the painted surface is. Van Gogh nevertheless concentrates a strong presence in this reduced format.

02

The headdress remains the luminous point

Even within the gilding, the blue-green whites of the cap form the coldest area and lead directly to the face.

03

The shawl builds a dark base

The black mass under the neck clearly separates the figure from its frame and brings the gaze back to the expression of the peasant woman.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The photographed original belongs to the EG Bührle Collection Foundation and is on long-term loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich. The instructions give the inventory BU 0052 and the catalogs F80/JH681.

Photograph

A real view of the framed work

The image shows the painting in its museum presentation and not a decorative simulation, which allows you to judge its scale.

Original

41 × 30.5 cm

The dimension concerns only the painted surface; the frame visible in the photograph adds a monumental presence to the small portrait.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

For your reproduction, the painter only uses Van Gogh's composition: the photographed frame is used to understand the scale and is not included in the painted surface.

  • The white and blue green hat
  • The black shawl
  • The small scale of the original
  • The separation between painting and frame

In your interior

Understand the scale before choosing its format

Museum photography helps imagine the work in small format above a console or in a wall of frames. A larger reproduction remains possible while strictly retaining the proportions.
