Tête de paysanne au bonnet blanc, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · March 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Peasant head in white hat, F80Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Under a white and bluish green cap, a peasant woman turns her face to the right. The oblique gaze, the very marked eyebrows and the almost black shawl compose a concentrated image where each touch participates in the expression.
Look at the work
A slanted look under a dazzling headdress
The model is seen from three quarters, facing right. The cap draws a large light arc above the forehead and ends in two white sides which frame the temples.
The ocher face is hollowed out by brown lines at the eyes, nose and mouth. The black shawl forms a very dark base, on which the head appears to move forward.
Peasant's head with white cap F80/JH681 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel of 41 × 30.5 cm, painted in Nuenen in March 1885. Property of the Bührle Collection, it is presented at the Kunsthaus Zürich under number BU 0052.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
F80 is distinguished by the face facing right, the white-blue headdress and the black shawl. The tight framing transforms this model study into a very direct psychological presence.
The gaze goes to the right
The pupils and facial tilt create lateral tension, while the shoulders remain almost facing forward.
The hat frames without softening
The off-white, blue-gray and green touches follow the folds of the fabric. Their freshness brings out the ochres of the skin.
The shawl absorbs the bust
Very deep blacks and greens reduce the garment to a few planes. All the intensity thus focuses on the eyes and the mouth.
