Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · March 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Seen in profile, a peasant woman in a white hat stands out against a purplish-brown background. The light fabric forms a rounded mass around the skull, while the face and bodice are constructed in a warm range of ocher and earth.
Look at the work
The model looks to the left. The cap occupies almost the entire top of the painting and its long attachment goes down to the nape of the neck; the bust forms a diagonal which goes up towards the face.
The skin is worked with small orange and brown touches. The mauve background, the earthy garment and the cream headdress create three simple areas that make the silhouette immediately readable.
Peasant's Head with White Cap F131/JH685 is an oil on canvas mounted on a 41 × 35 cm panel, painted in Nuenen in March 1885. It is kept at the Woodone Museum of Art in Japan.
Composition, touch and color
F131 is one of the studies of peasant heads through which Van Gogh seeks accuracy of form and values. It is distinguished by its left profile, its large round cap and its purplish-brown background.
Its light shape surrounds the skull like a single volume. A few purple and gray folds are enough to suggest its texture.
The shoulder rises from the lower right edge towards the neck. This slope opposes a stable base to the narrower profile.
Face, background and clothing are all medium to dark in tone; only the hat captures a clearer light.
Documented benchmarks
Catalogues raisonnés describe F131/JH685 as an oil on canvas mounted on a 41 × 35 cm panel, painted in Nuenen in March 1885 and kept at the Woodone Museum of Art.
The left-facing profile and the very rounded cap make it possible to distinguish this version from those of Bern and Zurich.
Van Gogh constructs the face by the intensity of browns, oranges and grays rather than a regular outline design.
The work is kept in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, in the collection of the Woodone Museum of Art.
