Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · March-April 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
A young peasant woman appears in profile, her face almost entirely absorbed by the shadow of her cap. Behind her, a luminous green-yellow background transforms this leading study into radical research on backlighting.
Look at the work
The woman looks to the left. His cap forms a large black mass at the top of the canvas; the forehead, nose, lips and chin emerge through faint brown and pink passages.
The background changes from light yellow-green on the left to colder greens behind the shoulder. The jacket remains almost black, so that the edge of the face and neck concentrates the entire light transition.
Head of a young peasant girl with a dark hat F150/JH650 is an oil on canvas measuring 39.7 × 25.5 cm painted in Nuenen in March-April 1885. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 110.977.
Composition, touch and color
The museum describes this study as research into a "darkness that remains color". Van Gogh does not uncover the shadows: he mixes Prussian blue, brown, green and some pink accents.
Its square and very dark shape occupies the top of the portrait. However, a few differences in brown and blue allow us to perceive the edge and folds.
The nose, mouth and chin are never circled with a light line. They become visible thanks to the transitions between warm browns, black greens and small pink touches.
The lightest yellow greens are in front of the face. They evolve towards a darker blue-green near the shoulder and reinforce the silhouette without theatrical effect.
Documented benchmarks
The KM 110.977 inventory, the dimensions of 39.7 × 25.5 cm and the references F150/JH650 identify this head in profile. It is different from the frontal portraits with large white headdresses painted during the same campaign.
The painting belongs to Otterlo's collection and bears the number KM 110.977. The museum notice documents the support, date and search for chiaroscuro.
Dark outlines aren't just black. Prussian blue mixes with browns and greens, while the ear and chin receive pink touches.
The shapes remain flat and some areas are barely repeated. This direct execution allows Van Gogh to study the lighting effect without transforming the model into a worldly portrait.
Your reproduction
The copy must retain the large mass of the hat, the profile turned left, the truly colored shadows, the weak pink accents and the transition from yellow-green to blue-green background.

In your interior
Verticality and strong backlighting create a contemporary accent in an office, bookcase or entryway. Acid green goes well with dark wood, anthracite gray and patinated brass.
