À propos de l’œuvre
Tête d'un jeune paysan avec une casquette, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · Mid-end March 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Head of a young peasant, F165Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A young peasant stares at the viewer under a large black green cap. The frontal face, enlarged eyes and dark blouse are constructed with the earthy colors with which Van Gogh wanted to translate the harshness of rural life.
Look at the work
A frontal face under a massive cap
The head fills almost the entire width. The visor forms a dark mass above the forehead; the ears, the light collar and the round button stabilize a rigorously frontal pose.
The blue-gray background surrounds the silhouette with a light halo. Ocher, olive, brown and a few pink accents shape the face without seeking the smooth finish of an official portrait.
Head of a Young Peasant F165/JH688 is a 42.1 × 31.9 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen around the middle or end of March 1885. It is kept at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art under number 37-1.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This study belongs to the campaign of at least forty peasant heads carried out before The Potato Eaters. The museum highlights the use of colors comparable to those of a dusty potato.
The visor weighs on the forehead
Its black green stripes give the cap an almost sculptural thickness and accentuate the shadow around the eyes.
Eyes carry expression
Small light highlights surrounded by brown make the eye appear. Their slight asymmetry maintains the living presence of the model.
Blue cools the earth
The blue-gray background and some cold features of the cap bring out the ochres of the face and the deep green of the blouse.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Nelson-Atkins Museum notice gives an oil on canvas measuring 42.07 × 31.91 cm, dated mid to late March 1885 and inventoried 37-1. The catalogs identify it F165/JH688.
F165 and JH688
These references designate the portrait with a blue-gray background of Kansas City. It should not be confused with F163/JH687, kept in Brussels.
Prepare Potato Eaters
Van Gogh studies faces, hats and expressions in order to construct a large, credible peasant scene rather than a worldly portrait.
Assumed earth tones
Greens, ochres and browns reflect the work in the great outdoors. Van Gogh also begins to bring together opposite colors to reinforce their intensity.
