Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Claude Monet · 1914 -1917 · private collection · W1819

Waterfront daylilies W1819hand painted reproduction

Orange-red daylilies appear at the edge of the pool, surrounded by long acid green leaves. Behind them, the water mixes blue, purple, green and brown without revealing a clear edge. In this large square canvas from 1914 -1917, Monet brings the gaze so close to his garden that the vegetation and the reflection become the same field of color.

Look at the work

The orange flowers burst between the tufts of leaves while the pond absorbs any stable boundary

Three groups of plants structure the canvas: a dark tuft at the bottom left, a wider mass in the center and another on the right. Their long, curved leaves rise towards the water, then merge with the blue and green gestures of the reflection.

The flowers are few in number but very intense. Vermilion red, orange and some yellow accents detach them from the surrounding purple blue. Their irregular distribution prevents the composition from becoming decorative and guides the eye throughout the square format.

The bank and the water no longer oppose each other: the same gestures pass from the leaves to the reflections, while the orange keeps the flowers on the surface.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diving framing without horizon

Monet places the viewer above the edge of the pool. The ground, shore and water overlap; this ambiguity must be preserved rather than clarified by invented contours.

02

Orange as a complementary color

Hot daylilies vibrate on contact with blues and purples. A few accents are enough: too much red would weaken the plant balance of the canvas.

03

Foliage drawn by gesture

The long leaves are not described one by one. They are born from rapid curves, sometimes repeated in yellow or blue, which give each tuft its movement.

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 1413 × 1413 px. It has been converted to true WebP at its native resolution, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Three masses around an open center

The plant tufts frame an area of calmer water in the middle. This breathing prevents the two square meters of canvas from becoming uniformly dense.

Color02

Lime green, cobalt blue and orange-red

The palette is bold but remains linked by intermediate olive, turquoise and mauve tones. Transitions matter as much as sharp contrasts.

Matter03

A free material from the late period

The keys cross and leave their directions visible. Oil reproduction must preserve these differences in thickness without smoothing the surface.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These landmarks concern Daylilies at the water's edge, private collection, Wildenstein 1819.

Identification01

Wildenstein 1819

The catalog raisonné dates this oil on canvas from 1914 -1917 and gives it the number 1819. Its square format measures 200 × 200 cm.

Pattern02

The red daylily in the Giverny garden

Orange flowers are daylilies, perennial plants grown at the edge of the Monet basin. They appear here with their long arched leaves.

Series03

A work close to the large decorations

Through its scale, its framing without horizon and its ample touch, the canvas belongs to the monumental research that Monet carried out from 1914 around his water garden.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact Wildenstein 1819 version in private collection
  • The original square ratio of 200 × 200 cm
  • Orange flowers kept punctual within blues and greens
  • The limit between vegetation and reflection kept deliberately ambiguous
