À propos de l’œuvre
Tête de paysanne au bonnet blanc, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · November 1884 - May 1885 · Nuenen
Peasant head in white hat, F85Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Gordina de Groot looks straight ahead, framed by a vast white gauze headdress placed on a darker cap. Van Gogh constructs his face with brown, red, green and orange touches, while the almost black garment and background reinforce the model's presence.
Look at the work
The white of the headdress brings the face out of the shadows
The cap occupies almost the entire upper width. Its side panels form two light masses around the cheeks, and its pleated edge draws a succession of small vertical touches above the forehead.
The face is placed in the center, without decoration or accessories. Very open eyes, frontal nose and closed mouth focus the gaze on Gordina's features, while the white neckline discreetly separates the head from the dark garment.
Peasant's head with a white cap F85/JH693 is an oil on canvas of 44 × 36 cm painted in Nuenen between November 1884 and May 1885. The original, inventoried KM 100.285, is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The canvas rests on a clear chiaroscuro, but no white or black is uniform. Cool, warm colors run through the headdress, skin and jacket.
The pleated edge is described by a cadence of short lines
Van Gogh juxtaposes gray, cream and bluish brushstrokes to make the gauze. The faster passages on the exterior sides give the headdress a supple and irregular volume.
The face is shaped by colors rather than a smooth finish
Ocher, red, green and brown overlap on the forehead, cheeks and chin. The touches remain visible and give the lines an almost sculpted density.
Prussian blue connects the shadows of the headdress and clothing
Blue accents cool dark areas without making them neutral. A few reds on the cheeks and lips respond to this cold base.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The number KM 100.285, the format of 44 × 36 cm and the references F85/JH693 make it possible to identify this study among the numerous peasant heads carried out in Nuenen.
The model is Gordina de Groot
Van Gogh depicts her in at least twenty studies. She also poses with her family for Potato Eaters, where she appears on the left with a white headdress.
The white gauze is worn over a dark cap
This local Nuenen costume naturally accentuates the transparent design of the gauze. Van Gogh is precisely interested in the contrast between the illuminated white and the face in the shadows.
The face and headdress receive different treatments
The facial features are applied with rough touches and superimposed; the folds of the headdress are detailed by small parallel lines then by freer gestures.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the frontal framing, the exact fullness of the headdress, its pleated edge, dark eyes, discreet reds of the face and Prussian blues mixed with shadows.
- The light pleat placed just above the forehead
- The two sections of gauze which frame the cheeks
- Orange and red touches of the forehead and lips
- The cold blue present in the shadows of the headdress
- The white neckline that detaches the bust from the bottom
