À propos de l’œuvre

Tête de paysanne à la coiffe blanche, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · December 1884 · Nuenen

Head of an old peasant woman with a white headdress, F146Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

An old peasant woman stares at the viewer under a white headdress with long ties. The sunken cheeks, tight lips and bony chin are painted in brown and orange touches, without idealization.

Look at the work

The headdress frames a long face, each plane of which remains visible

The hat forms a gray arc above the forehead, then its attachments descend widely on each side. The face, narrower towards the chin, occupies the central axis above a dark brown garment.

The black background absorbs the contours of the bust and advances the broken whites of the fabric. On the skin, ochres, browns and a few lighter accents outline wrinkles and hollows without progressive fade.

Head of an old peasant woman with a white headdress F146/JH551 is an oil on canvas mounted on a panel measuring 33.3 × 25.7 cm, painted in Nuenen in December 1884 and kept in a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The head is centered, but the irregularity of the attachments, eyebrows and mouth avoids any rigidity. The contrast of white and black reinforces the ocher construction of the face.

01

The cap forms a frame within the frame

Its upper arch and side attachments completely surround the face. The whites are never pure: gray, olive and cream make the fabric thick.

02

Wrinkles become structural lines

The eyebrows, furrows of the cheeks and folds around the mouth are drawn by dark touches which organize the volumes.

03

Bust sinks into shadow

The brown folds of the garment are barely distinguishable from the bottom. This fusion focuses all the light on the headdress and the features of the model.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F146/JH551, the format of 33.3 × 25.7 cm and the dating of December 1884 make it possible to distinguish this old peasant woman from the F146a study kept in Saint Louis.

Model

A resident of Nuenen whose name is not known

The same physiognomy appears in several studies attributed to the portrait campaign of the winter of 1884 -1885, without the identity of the model being established.

Series

One of the many "heads of the people"

Van Gogh multiplies these small formats to learn how to quickly capture rural faces, their headdresses and the effect of light in dark interiors.

Distinction

Two very close numbers, two different tables

This work is numbered F146/JH551; the Peasant's Head of the Saint Louis Art Museum, with its wider face and blue gray headdress, is F146a/JH565.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the long face, the arch of the headdress, the cream ties, the wrinkles drawn brown, the tight mouth, the dark clothing and the almost black background.

  • The headdress with gray and olive whites
  • Strongly defined eyebrows
  • Deep and asymmetrical cheeks
  • Narrow mouth above chin
  • Clothing folds melted into shadow
