Look at the work

Shadeless boats, drawn like prints

The large white and red boat in the foreground opens the composition, while the green, blue and yellow boats overlap behind it. Their masts cross the sky and cut out a series of very readable triangles and obliques.

The coast rises diagonally towards the horizon, separating the gray-beige sand from the lavender blue sea. The distant sails, smaller and smaller, extend the gaze to the right and give depth to this deliberately flat construction.

Painted in June 1888 after a stay in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the Boats on the Beach is an oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81.5 cm. Work F413/JH1460 is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0028V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum explains the slightly unreal appearance of the boats: they are composed of colored flat areas enclosed in strong contours and do not cast shadows. Van Gogh thus transposes processes observed in Japanese prints into painting.

The outlines build each boat

Red, green, blue and yellow are placed in free zones that dark lines clearly separate, as in a printed image.

Masts organize space

Vertical or oblique, they connect the beach to the sky and prevent the hulls grouped in the foreground from forming a compact mass.

The sea is made of broken bands

Bluish grays, purples and whites follow the shoreline; the small light foam is enough to suggest the movement of the waves.

Precisely identify the original work

F413/JH1460 is the large canvas of stranded boats kept in Amsterdam. The museum says Van Gogh drew the boats on the beach, then painted in the workshop, with fishermen going to sea too early to allow him to paint on site.

Van Gogh went to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in June 1888. Light, the sea and colorful boats provided him with several drawings and paintings.
