À propos de l’œuvre

Automne sur la Seine, Argenteuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Autumn foliage and reflections on the Seine · High Museum of Art

Autumn on the Seine, Argenteuil W291hand painted reproduction

Yellow and orange trees line an almost motionless Seine, where their colors extend into long vertical reflections. A few boats are moored on both banks and, in the distance, Château Michelet appears among the masts and chimneys. In 1873, Monet balanced the real landscape and its mirror until making the boundary between foliage, sky and water uncertain.

Look at the work

The Seine transforms the autumn colors into a second overturned bank

The left bank concentrates the warmest foliage, from yellow-green to orange. Three small dark, red boats line up below. On the right bank, blue-green trees and a strip of reeds below open a passage to the center of the river.

In the distance, the buildings and masts of Argenteuil are reduced to blue and gray verticals. The surface of the water takes up each group of colors with descending touches which break slightly. The clear sky is reflected in the center and creates a luminous column up to the foreground.

The reflection is not a simple double: it lengthens the colors, erases the contours and makes water the real active space of the painting.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Almost complete symmetry around the bank line

The High Museum highlights how colorful springs and their reflections become difficult to separate. Monet, however, maintains a difference in touch: tighter foliage above, vertical and fluid passages below.

02

A point of view probably chosen from the workshop boat

The low, water-centered position corresponds to the small boat that Monet transforms into a floating workshop. This device allows him to directly observe the two banks and the continuity of reflections.

03

Modern landmarks integrated into the mist of the distance

Château Michelet, the masts and chimneys precisely locate Argenteuil. Their low contrast places them in the atmosphere rather than making them dominant architectural elements.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Autumn on the Seine, Argenteuil from 1873, kept at the High Museum of Art under the inventory 2000.205 and cataloged Wildenstein 291. The high definition image was converted into a real WebP of 3,000 × 2,167 px.

Composition01

The reflections follow the color without copying the shape

Each tree produces a vertical trail that is softer and more mixed than its foliage. This difference must be preserved to make the water surface felt.

Color02

Both banks use opposite temperatures

Yellows and oranges dominate on the left, bluish greens on the right. Their meeting in the center structures the depth and gives the landscape its seasonal richness.

Matter03

The distance remains very slightly veiled

Houses, castles, masts and fireplaces are readable by only a few accents. Too strong contours would break the atmospheric unity of the Seine.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 54.2 × 73.3 cm. It is kept at the High Museum of Art under the 2000.205 inventory and listed as Wildenstein 291.

Location01

The Seine near Argenteuil

Monet moved to Argenteuil in 1871 and explored the banks, bridges, sailboats and modern transformations of the Paris suburbs. Château Michelet allows us to identify this sector of the river.

Technique02

The fully impressionist phase of 1873

The museum notes the delicate little touches and brilliant colors characteristic of this period. The variation in the gesture between foliage and reflection makes the luminous moment more important than the descriptive detail.

Presentation03

A work shown at the second impressionist exhibition

The painting appears in 1876 in the second exhibition organized by the Impressionists. It bears the signature and date Claude Monet 73 at the bottom right.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the flexible symmetry of the edges and their reflections.
  • Oppose the warm colors on the left to the bluish greens on the right.
  • Keep boats small but distinct.
  • Keep Château Michelet in the mist of the distance.
