Two banks covered with red trees tighten the Seine until a clear opening onto the town of Argenteuil. The sky and distant buildings extend into the water with a silver band, while the reds, ochres and greens are reflected on either side. Painted in 1873 from Monet's boat-workshop, the work makes autumnal color its true subject.
Look at the work
The left bank forms a large mass which descends almost to the lower edge. Its orange-reds are crossed by dark greens and small yellow lights. To the right, a narrower, more vertical row of trees narrows the perspective before stopping near the horizon.
Between these two masses, the Seine opens a clear path towards the houses and chimneys of Argenteuil. The reflections are placed in horizontal and parallel touches, but their superposition produces colored columns. The cloudy sky takes up the blues, creams and grays of the water without ever becoming uniform.
The river does not separate the two banks: it mixes their colors, stretches them and conducts the light from the horizon to the viewer.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
La Courtauld indicates that Monet paints from his boat moored in a calm arm of the Seine. This low viewpoint, placed in the center of the water, gives the banks their height and makes the reflective surface the main axis of the painting.
The oranges and reds of the leaves are opposed to the blues of the sky and water. Monet adds muted greens to the trees and mauves to the highlights so that the contrast remains atmospheric rather than decorative.
The museum notice indicates that Monet scratched certain passages of the trees with the handle of the brush. These furrows reveal underlying layers and enrich the sensation of foliage without drawing each leaf.

The visual corresponds to Autumn Effect in Argenteuil of 1873, inventory P.1932.SC.274 of the Courtauld Gallery and catalog Wildenstein 290. The only image is a real WebP of 1,073 × 795 px, preserved at its source definition.
The red, brown and yellow touches overlap, then lighter lines appear in the material. This variety prevents the banks from becoming two colored masses without depth.
Sky, city and water line up in a cream and blue-gray range. Their continuity creates distance; excessive contrast in buildings would make this breathing disappear.
Clear horizontal lines cut the long red and green areas. These interruptions make the surface mobile, even if the arm of the Seine appears calm.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 55 × 74.5 cm. It is kept at the Courtauld Gallery under the inventory P.1932.SC.274 and listed as Wildenstein 290.
La Courtauld identifies Monet's floating workstation. From this boat, the artist can choose an axis in the middle of the Seine and directly observe the changes in light on both banks.
The city is visible in the distance, but it remains secondary. The instructions emphasize the flamboyant foliage, the opposition of orange and blue and the texture produced in the trees.
Samuel Courtauld bought the painting in 1924 then offered it to the collection in 1932. The signature and date Claude Monet 73 are written at the bottom right.
