The stable facade measures wind speed

The hotel occupies the left half and stands in a very shortened perspective. Its balconies, windows and roof are indicated without dry precision. At the promenade level, small black and colorful silhouettes give the scale of the building.

On the right, the sky opens wide. The oblique poles and flags form a succession of diagonals which animate the entire vertical format. In the foreground, the large red and white striped flag almost seems to emerge from the painting.

The architecture remains still, but the clouds, fabrics and quick touches make you feel the same wind coming from the sea.

The height reinforces the facade and the pole of the foreground. It also leaves enough space for the sky to become a main player.

The red and white bands are not perfectly regular. Their deformation and open edges give the flag its movement.

It goes near the lower edge and directs the gaze towards the sky. Its inclination must remain stronger than that of the facade.

The sky combines gray, blue and cream

Clouds do not constitute a neutral background: their cold and hot passages give light to the whole.

Matter03

Walkers remain allusive

Hats and dresses are reduced to a few touches. Too much detail would reduce the feeling of distance and the liveliness of the walk.

This oil on canvas measuring 81 × 58 cm, painted in 1870, is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the inventory RF 1947 30 and corresponds to Wildenstein number 155.

Stay01

Trouville after Monet's marriage

Monet married Camille Doncieux on June 28, 1870 and stayed with her in Trouville during the summer. He observes the beach, the hotels and the elegant society of the Normandy coast.

Look02

A modern seaside resort

The subject owes a lot to the example of Eugène Boudin, familiar with Normandy beaches. Monet, however, tightens the scene and gives the flags an almost abstract presence.

Collection03

A donation to the state in 1947

Passed through the collections of Jean then Jacques Laroche, the painting was donated to the National Museums in 1947 with usufruct reservation. It was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
