Jean Monet stops with his hoop in the middle of a wide alley, while Camille appears in the doorway. The facade with red shutters, covered with vines, borders a meticulously flowered garden punctuated with large blue pots. In 1873, Monet painted the new stability of his life in Argenteuil in a clear, calm and very personal scene.

Look at the work

The driveway, blue pots and flowers transform the house into a family scene

The facade occupies the entire right side and leaks towards the bottom. Its cool shade covers part of the path, while the left garden receives more sun. Jean, small and almost centered, serves as a pivot between these two areas.

The blue and white pots punctuate the borders in two irregular rows. Red of the flowers and shutters, green of the foliage, yellow of the house and blue of the sky respond to each other around the beige path. Camille, in a blue dress, blends into the shadow of the door.

Long before Giverny, Monet already composed a garden like a painting: path, pots, flowers and figures are placed to lead the light to the house.

The Chicago notice identifies Monet's five- or six-year-old son and his wife. Their positions give the garden the character of a truly inhabited daily space.

Monet's first house in Argenteuil

The family rented the Aubry house, at the corner of rue Pierre-Guienne and boulevard Saint-Denis, from December 1871 to the summer of 1874. It was demolished in 1913.

The Ryerson legacy entered in 1933

The painting joins the Art Institute with the collection of Martin A. Ryerson and his wife. It is today presented in the 201 gallery according to the museum notice.
