Claude Monet · 1922 -1924 · the version signed and dated 1922

The Artist's House seen from the rose gardenhand painted reproduction

An orange-red path goes up to the almost hidden house; the rose bushes, trees and flowerbeds wrap around a yellow gap, in a canvas where the Giverny garden becomes a whirlwind of material.

Look at the work

The burning path crosses a garden that has become almost abstract

The house appears on the left by some pale pink, green and red verticals. It does not dominate the garden: branches and flowers pass in front of its facade, while a darker rose arch closes the right side. In the center, a light yellow opening catches the eye like a passage of light.

The aisle occupies the bottom of the canvas with vermilion reds, oranges and pinks placed in thick touches. It leads to the background without a strict linear perspective. The blues and greens on the left side respond to the burgundy and purples on the right side, creating depth per color temperature.

Monet no longer describes every plant in the garden: he retains the momentum of the path, the place of the house and the light that passes through the masses of flowers.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of The Artist's House seen from the rose garden - Claude Monet
01

A red diagonal in the foreground

The path enters widely from the lower edge then narrows. Its heat advances the foreground and gives a firm direction to very free vegetation.

02

The house absorbed by the garden

The facade remains recognizable on the left, but its verticals are interrupted by foliage. Architecture becomes a colorful element among plants.

03

A luminous gap without a defined sky

Central yellow can evoke the sun, the wall or the air between the branches. This ambiguity circulates light through all the painted material.

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Version01

Inventory 5108, signed "Claude Monet 22"

The Marmottan Monet Museum preserves this almost square canvas of 89 × 92 cm. The signature and date are placed at the bottom left; the catalog raisonné identifies it as Wildenstein 1944.

Dating02

A work from 1922 to 1924

The notice retains a period from 1922 to 1924. The painted date of 1922 places the beginning of the work, which Monet may have continued beyond this first campaign.

Provenance03

The legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

Remaining in the artist's family, the work entered the Marmottan Monet Museum with the legacy of her son Michel. It belongs to the large collection of the last views of Giverny.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The orange-red diagonal of the aisle
  • The facade visible without being detached from the foliage
  • The central yellow gap surrounded by roses
  • The balance between deep turquoise greens and burgundy

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This almost square canvas has rare chromatic energy. Its reds, greens and yellows are suitable for a neutral or deep wall - off-white, linen, forest green or petrol blue - with soft lighting.
