Look at the work

A built bank dissolves in its reflection

The pale green house placed slightly to the left of the center gives the scale of the entire scene. Alongside it, several lower gables, red roofs and small windows make up an irregular frieze. The trees close the bank on the left, while the succession of facades guides the eye to the right and towards the distance.

Water takes up almost half the size. The verticals of the houses become soft bands of green, ocher, pink and blue-gray. Instead of copying each building, Monet stretches and fragments their colors; small horizontal wrinkles interrupt these reflections and give the river its moving presence.

The precision of the gables stops at the water's edge, where the architecture becomes color.

The bank forms an almost horizontal line, but the varied heights of the gables, trees and chimneys prevent any monotony.

The colors of the upper part return to the water without exact symmetry. They lengthen, mix and change value upon contact with wrinkles.

Diffuse light without harsh shadow

The overcast sky leaves the houses brightly colored without producing strong contrasts. This equal light connects the village, the vegetation and the river.

The unique reference reproduces canvas 1385 from the Städel Museum. The open file of 3663 × 2363 px was reduced to 3000 × 1935 px, without enlargement, then converted to WebP to preserve key and color reading.

The green house catches the eye at first, but the pink facades, red roofs and dark trees redistribute the balance across the entire width.

Temperate complements

Water greens and facade greens meet roses, bricks and ochres. The gray blues of the sky prevent this warm range from becoming decorative.

Keys adapted to each material

The walls are laid in broken areas, the trees in more nervous signs and the reflections in vertical gestures immediately crossed by horizontal accents.

Zaandam after London

Monet moved to Zaandam for several months with his family in 1871. The colorful houses, mills and waterways provided him with a series of motifs very different from French landscapes.

Pattern02

A city observed from the river

The Städel notice highlights the brilliance of summer light on the picturesque houses and their reflection. The low viewpoint gives the surface of the Zaan a role as important as that of the shore.

Collection03

Acquired by Städel in 1904

After a stint with Paul Durand-Ruel then in the collection of Adolphe Tavernier, the painting was purchased by Städel in 1904. It is one of the museum's early impressionist acquisitions.
