À propos de l’œuvre
Tête de paysanne au bonnet blanc, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · December 1884 · Nuenen
Peasant head in white hat, F144Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Seen in profile, a peasant woman wears an imposing white headdress which occupies almost the entire upper half of the painting. Van Gogh contrasts this light volume with the brown face and the dark work clothing, without adding narrative decor.
Look at the work
A monumental headdress transforms this profile into a silhouette
The model turns her head to the right. The forehead, nose, lips and chin draw a very clear continuous line, while the eye remains partially drowned in the shadow cast by the headdress.
The white linen is constructed with large touches of gray, cream and bluish. Its rear part goes down to the shoulders and responds to the green-brown folds of the garment, on a uniform background in earth tones.
Peasant's head with white cap F144/JH561 is an oil on canvas mounted on panel measuring 40.9 × 30.4 cm, painted in Nuenen in December 1884 and kept in a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The portrait is held by a very simple relationship between three masses: the brown background, the white headdress and the dark bust. The precision of the profile, however, prevents the composition from becoming abstract.
The headdress dominates the vertical format
Its rounded top and its broad return to the nape of the neck take up more surface area than the face. Cold grays give relief to the fabric without uniform white.
The profile is cut firmly
The nose, closed mouth and chin stand out against the background. A few red and black accents are enough to clarify the features.
The garment prolongs the downward movement
The vertical folds of the bodice and the curve of the shoulder form a heavy base, deliberately less detailed than the head.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
References F144/JH561, the date December 1884 and the format of 40.9 × 30.4 cm identify this study within the vast collection of peasant heads painted in Nuenen.
A study carried out during the Nuenen winter
Van Gogh then multiplies the portraits of peasants from the front or in profile in order to observe their faces, their headdresses and their clothes.
Light is reserved for laundry
The face remains deliberately dark, while the lightest touches describe the thick folds of the headdress and immediately focus the gaze.
F144 should not be confused with F144a
This version shows a straight profile under a very large white headdress. F144a designates another seated peasant woman, represented from the front.
