Look at the work

The white headdress opens a luminous crown in the black background

The face is centered, almost symmetrical, but the two wings of the headdress do not respond exactly. On the right, a white section forms a clear angle; on the left, the fabric folds into several gray-blue bands.

Van Gogh constructs the features with broad facets: green-brown on the cheeks, ocher on the forehead and nose, black around the eyes. The dark bodice forms a triangular base that fixes the head in the center.

Peasant's head with white headdress F146a/JH565 is an oil on canvas measuring 43.8 × 34.6 cm painted in Nuenen in December 1884. The Saint Louis Art Museum preserves it under the inventory 90:2000.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The portrait is based on the opposition between the white-gray fabric and the almost black mass of the garment. The clean touches give the face a sculptural construction.

01

The headdress outlines the silhouette

Its pleated edge follows an arc above the forehead then descends on each side. This clear shape clearly separates the head from the bottom.

02

The lines are modeled without smoothing

The cheekbones, nose and mouth are formed by juxtaposed planes. Each color change corresponds to a direction of the face.

03

The gaze holds the center

Dark eyes are close together and almost horizontal. Their fixity balances the irregular movements of folds and brushstrokes.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Saint Louis Art Museum notice and references F146a/JH565 establish the format, the date December 1884 and the inventory 90:2000.

Nuenen

A portrait painted directly from a model

The work belongs to the group of peasant heads executed during the winter of 1884 - 1885, when Van Gogh had residents pose in work clothes.

Research

Color replaces detailed drawing

The structure of the face arises from large brown, green and ocher areas. This direct bill prepares the vigor of the Potato Eaters characters.

Museum
